Those of you around Central California should check FAA ARTCC channels 128.70 & 307.00MHz for some sort of emitter transmitting out DTMF strings. It was first noticed on Monday on the air throughout the day & until around 10PM, was quiet yesterday, but is apparently back on the air right now.
Due to the very wide area the emitter is being heard, it's thought to be an aircraft, though the DTMFs mean it's not something as simple as an accidental, stuck-mic. DTMFs aren't really a waveform used by military aircraft for VHF/UHF comms jamming, and the rate of the DTMFs indicate it's not someone manually sending the tones.
I'm not hearing it in the San Francisco Bay area, but it has been heard around Santa Barbara & the Monterey/Salinas/King City areas. It was even reported to be heard by an air traffic control facility out in the Las Vegas area.
Those of you who don't hear the signal in question might still hear Oakland Center ARTCC comms on the paired frequencies, but if you DO hear the DTMF signal in question, could you please let me know the basics of the equipment you're using (especially antenna type/height), your location, signal strength, whether there was any fading, how long you heard it for, and then of course any comments on possible location, etc. of the emitter. You could just respond here, or send me a private message.
