I was thinking of getting a Unication pager for monitoring the P25 Simulcast systems in MA. From what I can see, everything seems to be 700/800 MHz here. Is there any benefit to getting the dual band G5 over the G4 and if so, what second band would you get? I see VHF and then 2 UFH bands as options.

It's a excellent scanner for simulcast. Just see what frequencies are in your area that you would program a knob selection for. A learning curve to program, excellent support on RR.

The secondary band is the only benefit and only difference between the two models. If there are areas you frequent or may want to be in that utilize UHF or VHF, it's great to have.

It's worth reminding that this isn't a scanner and has different features and limitations. But reception, clarity, and reliability are a real leap from many scanners.

Thanks all! Yes, I'm aware of its limitations and that it's not exactly a scanner. I'm still not sure if I'll need/want the dual band, so still figuring that one out.

G5 are they nice and easy to program and work good I think about getting one at some point?

There is a learning curve to the programming. You can download the programming software from their site to check it out.

It differs greatly from a regular scanner, so you’ll want to do some research if it’s the right setup for you before diving into the purchase of one.

If you're interested in monitoring in the greater Springfield area you might consider UHF to pickup Westcomm and Ludlow. Otherwise all P25 trunking in the state is 7/800.

Unication G-Series pagers are great, my #1 travel radio.

Ok thanks you do you have one and if so do you like it
Very good radio, but with some limitations as compared to a traditional scanner. Conventional channels scan slow and you are limited to scanning no more than 16 conventional channels concurrently. Or you can scan one trunked system, with up to 64 identified talkgroups, or use a wildcard and receive all talkgroups on the system without benefit of an alias (text label) and without any selectivity (i.e. can’t filter out sanitation dept and dog catcher). Can’t scan trunked and conventional concurrently.

Given the above limits, reception quality and ruggedness are both great.

My main reason to purchase my G5 was to monitor our local 700/800 P25P2 systems, however, my Hi split UHF G5 allows me to monitor a local DMR system ( DMR feature was added by Unication) . The price differences between G4 and G5 are negligible. G5 is my main listening device . It just works.

i have the G3 just for UHF2. Realy like it. Didnt find the programming confusing at all. Just review it before you dig in. One question is: as anyone figured our hoiw to get rid of the beeping sounds when on blue tooth. Sometimes when the answer is yes or no, I loose it cause its covered by beep. Any help???

I was lucky and found a G5 well used but still 100% at a fair price. It has VHF in it. Since I'm a ham I put some VHF ham stuff in there , one area that still uses VHF i occasionally work in, and the weather channels. If you have anything in your area you might even want to ever listen to, I'd get the G5 in the appropriate band especially if your buying new.

Yes, I also have a G4 and looking to get a second G5 when I can find one used for a good price. I've tried many scanners, and for what I do, the Unication pagers blow everything else out of the water.
