• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Unication G4 issues

An issue I have with my Unication G4 is when I try to put a channel on hold, it jumps to another channel. For instance…if there is a transmission on HCFR (Hillsborough County Fire Rescue) I hit the button to hold on the channel, and it will go to a sheriffs department channel. Even when just listening and not trying to hold a channel it randomly switches to another channel.

I just switched the auto squelch setting from low to off so hopefully that will help.

Do you have priority channels set? Do you have a TGID hold timeout on?

And, may sound like a dumb question, but, you have enabled TGID hold, right?

I have one of those g5 s from Rays pagers. It is a very good receiver but requires a lot of puzzle solving skills to program. It is a good receiver for a retiree or someone not working as it is extraordinary complex on the programming side. You have to put all the numbers in exactly the right place in the right order for the thing to work correctly.

As do the new Whistler and Uniden scanners, but what people forget is the G-Series pagers were designed for professionals, and departments, usually with comm techs or radio department. It wasn't designed for the hobbyist or amateurs. It's like using a Motorola radio as a scanner.

Indeed you are correct. Where do these techs go to get their training? I might sign up.

Honestly, you wouldn't need quite that much knowledge like you're working as a professional. The Unications seem no more complex than other trunking scanners, except maybe for all the tones settings. For someone new to scanning, it will be a challenge. But if you've programmed trunking scanners before, then I think it's about the same difficulty.

Yeah, but I think the original question could apply to a hobbyist or professional alike.

I have followed all the recommendations above. I do think the problem was the squelch setting. I also know the G4 is a great radio, but it is not a scanner…even though it has some of the functionality of a scanner.

Hmmm, the squelch wouldn't cause whatever TG you're holding on to suddenly be interrupted and switch to another TG. Have you actually resolved the issue?

I theek its easier to program than most high end scanners on the market today, but codeplugs are next best thing to paying someone i encourage everyone to upload a copy of their radios to share with the novice programmer..
Thank you
