we are in the process of trying to get a unication g5 pager set up for our station alerting system. When the pager is plugged into the amplifier/cradle, it will randomly go in and out of range for random amounts of time. When it is out of the cradle, it does not go in and out of range. We have gotten a new cradle, reprogrammed, updated software/firmware, relocated the setup, still have issues. When it is in vhf mode it does not have an issue. Has anyone else had this issue or know what could still be causing it?

Make sure the pager is firmly seated in the charging base. Make sure the contacts are clean on both. What antenna do you have on the back of the charger? On my telescopic on the one system I monitor most I had to experiment with the length of the antenna to get it working properly. Also you can try moving the base a little bit one way or the other, I've had that make a difference too.

I own an amplified charger for my G5 and am not a huge fan of it. The pager doesn’t seem
to pick up very well on 7/800 in the charger. I don’t believe the rear antenna jack is used for 7/800; at least anecdotally it doesn’t seem to matter whether there is an antenna connected or not. Guessing it is only used for the other band (VHF/UHF). I have also wondered if there is something in the amplified charger that produces some interference, but haven’t done any testing to try to figure this out. Even though you moved the pager to different locations, it may still be a signal strength problem. The signal strength indicator isn’t the most precise, either, so that doesn’t help. There is a button you can press to see the actual RSSI value (I can’t remember what it is and I don’t have my pager in front of me, perhaps someone else can chime in); I would suggest bringing that up, stepping away from the pager a few feet to ensure your body isn’t affecting it too much, and noting the RSSI. Then do the same thing with the pager out of the charger and compare.

I can confirm that the amp charger does use the rear antenna for 7/800. I have taken the top antenna off while it was in the amp charger and it switched over to the rear. And yes, there is a menu setting to display RSSI.

As I mentioned before, I use a legacy RS 800 on the back of my amp charger which gives me a noticeable coverage over my G5 supplied antenna. Within exception of one DMR system, my G5 is my dedicated device to monitor simulcast 700/800 systems. It has worked flawlessly from day one.
In my experience most if not all of the OTR notices are results of targeted systems changes , maintance or distance to the TT.
