Unication Pager DMR Question

I'm thinking of buying a Unication G-3 VHF/UHF pager. I am trying to give my APX8000 a break and also not have to carry the APX for extended periods of time when I go out. I know very well what the G3 covers and what modes etc.. The only thing I am not sure about is whether I want to get the DMR option or not. I am not too familiar with DMR systems here in New Haven County. Is there much DMR activity in this area? Anyone have a Unication pager with the DMR option in this area? It isn't a deal breaker for me, I'm just trying to decide if there is enough activity to warrant getting the option.

Thanks

Manny

Besides the two amateur radio DMR systems (ARES and HDN-DMAC) there are a few DMR based systems. Qunnipiac University, Tweed New Haven ops / ARFF, Avelo airline ops, DPWs for New Haven, Shelton, Stratford, and Trumbull, and Eversource come to mind.

Also I don’t think the Unication pagers do DMR trunking just conventional , also I believe that eversource system is a 200mhz trunked system that the pagers won’t be in band for

Unication will only do DMR conventional. For the upgrade cost it is worth it, especially since they do not let you field upgrade it in the future, if you want to add it later, it will have to go back to Unication. Mostly business stuff, but more and more are moving to DMR, so really it is a preference to what you listen to and what you may want to in the future.

I agree with the above, and often times dealers have one with DMR in stock so it doesn't need to go back for upgrade and take weeks to get back. Cost to upgrade is reasonable enough that it is better to have it and not need it, than not have it and need it.

While I've yet to use mine on DMR, I just found out an area I will be working in still has a department on DMR. I'm glad the used one I bought has it in there. As was said above, better to have and not need than need and not have. When I bought my G5 used, I never thought the DMR would be of any use to me but now, I find out it might be.

Well, lots of good info and replies here, thanks guys. I am going to go for the DMR option. With the way things are changing in communications these days, it makes sense to have the option just in case. If I need DMR trunking, I have my 2- SDS200s to listen with. Both have the upgrade. Thanks a lot everyone for your input.

What system are you actually wanting to monitor up there? I'm seeing a system on 700/800 and the G3 doesn't cover that. I know you said you know what it covers but, if I lived up that way the G3 wouldn't be the pager I'd personally purchase. to get the CLMRN you're gonna need a G4 or, a G5 and then pick the second band on the G5.
