• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

The location in his profile shows Hammond and is in Lake County Indiana.

Database shows they are on a 700 MHz simulcast system. Unication G4 would be my choice.

Also works for the statewide SAFE-T system.

I looked after I posted the question. I'd "assume" he'd want Lake Co. IN after looking. I listen to the Madson Co IL simulcast at home usually but I still prefer a G5 as we have a couple fire Dept hold outs and once in a while I listen up on there. Also I like the option to use it for weather channels when out and about. The G4 would definitely satisfy his needs it looks like. Take care out there in Greeley, need to get out that way soon and see our daughter.

I second @K9KLC's recommendation. Love my G5, and I'm certain you will, too. Just make certain you consider carefully what secondary freq. range you want, based on what's available to monitor in your area. There are four to choose from:

The OP did specifically ask about the Lake County system. If that is all they are interested in no need to spend the additional cost for VHF or UHF coverage if it is not needed.

A reminder one can only monitor one system or one band with these at a time with these radios/pagers (aka "not a scanner") and are not exactly budget friendly.

The reminders are always good on the Unications, people do get confused all the time trying to do this and that with them when they're designed to do one thing (but do it well).

I guess because I don't buy new, I never encountered this. I had been able to find G5's used for about the same price as the G4's were going for at the time I actually made the purchase. Yes, if they're buying new, and 100% sure they'll never want to monitor anything else in their area there's no point to get the second band. Truthfully what happened with me was I was out near a fire scene and in my area they switched to one of the MABAS fire frequencies which was not on the simulcast I monitor 99% of the time and obviously on the G4 I was not able to go to VHF and hear that which I had in my G5's back home. I was able to get my Unications used for a reasonable price compared to what the SDS scanners were selling for used so I guess I was lucky.

Also it may be important to @aandraldaba to note that normally unless you do a wild card scan, any one knob position will only take 64 Talk Groups. I see a lot going on there in Lake Co, IN and while there is some encryption there is a lot in the open yet. Not sure what all he's wanting to listen to but might be worth noting.

We were certainly not intending to denigrate your suggestion of the G4… sorry if it came across that way.

Most of us just prefer to have to added capability to monitor other things besides just one or two systems in a single band. It’s just a matter of personally preference.

Agreed!! The G4 will work GREAT for the exact system he mentioned. I use mine (the one G4 I have) at home here in conjunction with the others to monitor the one simulcast system we listen to day in and day out.

No offense taken. Just mentioning that if the OP does not need an additional band that would save them money. Especially if they are buying new as was pointed out by K9KLC and others in this thread.

Owning both a G4 and G5 for a number of years these receiver/pagers are durable and will perform for years. Which ever model the OP invests in they will be pleased with it.

My G5's are from 2019 and the G4 is a year or so newer I guess. All were purchased used. I recently had to send the G4 back to Unication for the toggle repair, but it had 7 days warranty left somehow so got in under the gun on that one. All of the pagers I have purchased had been used with the amplified charging bases so not too much wear on the little USB port which I was glad about.

I have purchased new batteries for all of them, and also the updated "blue band" 700/800 antenna which honestly did make a difference in receive. My one G5 goes to work with me daily, and gets bumped, banged and occasionally dropped and it's still going strong. I can safely say, if the OP understands the limits of the Unication vs a hobby grade scanner and it will serve his needs, he can't go wrong.

I wish I bought the g5 for vhf here in St. Louis area, would have opened up some options for me.
I only want to point out so it's clear to the OP, the Unication G5 will NOT scan 700/800 trunking and anything VHF at the same time in the same knob position. That being said, Yep opens up options that might come in handy one day, especially on the MOSWIN system in MO.
