I just got a Uniden 796D. Read the book and I'm lost. I dont understand how to program this unit. The old days you just put freq in. Is there a site or book that will help me learn how to program this unit and what all the nex digital DEC HEX stuff means.

gwsmith, when I got my 785D, I programmed the first dozen or so conventional freqs and my first trunked net by hand - frequencies and a handful of talkgroups. That was enough for me. I ran to find a computer program to do it and have done it that way ever since. It's so much easier. This is the one I used and it's extremely popular:

When I purchased my 780, my friend who is retired wanted one too, so I ordered both of them. I actually spent the better part of the weekend programing both units through the keyboard. This included eight trunked systems and two conventional banks, all complete with alpha tags. I made up my mind from that day on, any new scanner that I purchase will be programmed by software through the computer. Doing it by hand is for the birds!

I have been reading and checking all the web sites I can find. I would just like to get started by putting in a couple of trunked freqs and letting the unit scan.
So fare I think I can get the freqs in one bank. I'm not sure how to get it to scan for ID's. The Uniden book is not very helpful in setting this up. Does anybody have a doc or web site on how to step by step program this unit?

Okay, here's all you have to do gwsmith...
Enter the frequencies for a particular net, making sure that the control channel is one of them. See database on this site for that info.
Once those are entered, just hit ID Search and the scanner will sit on the control freq until activity appears and then the scanner will display the talkgroup that's active and the frequency that they're using for that transmission. That's all you need to start hearing something. Write down the talkgroups to build your list and watch the freqs to make sure you have them all programmed. Simple, huh? If you hit SCAN, it will do nothing without some talkgroups programmed so that's why we're going to use ID Search instead. Oh, and make sure you program "trunk" into the scanner, at least for the control freq and mode is NFM, steps are 12.5. Also make sure you have the particular bank you're using programmed for the type trunking system you're trying to listen to.

I guess my confusion is Id like to program in the main dispatch for police and fire. Then all the alt channels. I've looked over the list in this site. But I dont understand how to know what freq and ID are what. I think I understand that one freq can have up to ten ID on the sdcanner, but whitch ten do i put in.

I think you're having the same problem I had when I was first exposed to trunking systems. I read the book, looked at the scanner and just sighed. What you've got to change in your mind is that certain groups of the police or fire department are just on certain frequencies. Once you program all the frequencies for a particular service into the scanner, you can stop thinking about frequencies because they become just a vehicle for anything within the county or particular group of people you want to hear. After the freqs are programmed, concentrate on which groups of people you want to hear and they will be identified by a TalkGroup and can use any of the frequencies assigned to that county or service.
I'm not sure which service you're attempting to program so maybe if you spell it out we can point you at certain talkgroups and how to find them on this site. I'm assuming you have gone to the database at this site for your info. If not, right near the top of this page you fill find a link to take you to the database. I persoanally did program every county and city police peice of info in my 296d...I do like doing this so I know where and how everything works.... I will do it again when the 396 comes out and I get that...As for scrolling down for the letters and thats time consuming, but if you have good patience it pays off...I figure that you probably did it yourself.lol. That is why I post this here...Hope you figured it out by now.....It can be fun not to be computer dependent !!!
