Uniden 996 XT recording problems

I have a new 996 XT scanner hooked up to a new Dell laptop. I have the ARC-XT PRO software installed. I have issues with the recording software.
The problem is that the software crashes periodically. I can record for a period of time and then the computer dumps the software and leaves the usual windows message "Windows has encountered a problem with this program and needs to shut the program down? or words to that effect.

I have the computer power options set to never shut anything off, there is no automatic update running, nothing should interfere with the software, and there are no other programs running. The computer is running XP pro.

Anybody have ideas?
