:) Looking for some Answers. On The BC 796d I have 2 of Them. Good Radio BUT,Have Trouble with it Trunking on The CSP. Barely if all, Will it Trunk properly for what I Want. Programmed in the Control Channels, With no Talk groups etc Just to see what would Happen, Works Fine. Birdies on 868.9125 & 866.300 though. For the one I carry in my Vehicle, It will not Trunk At all,CSP Control Channels put in Conventional Work Fine. Have HPD & HFD programmed in, It Trunks Great. So That is my Dilemma. Programming in All of the CSP Freqs Conventionaly It Works Great ,but What Am I Missing by Doing it that way? Thoughts & Suggestions would be GREATLY Appreciated

Sounds like you programmed in CC mode but forgot to tell the scanner which CC PLAN is in use.

yep , sounds like you didnt program the plan........go into the menu section of the scanner and make sure the plan is set to plan # 2 if that doesnt work , im sure youll get plenty of responses from people on the site who will work you through this problem.

the way i have programmed the radio is with all of the freqs that are listed on this site. one of the problems of programming with control channel only is that you can not change the quality of the audio. program all of the channels for your area and leave it on search. for the hartford area, make sure you have the primary data channel in the list 868.5625. if you travel around, you have to make sure you are listening to the right data channel. hope this helps bill simpson

No one asked the obvious.....is your P-25 board enabled? CSP is a digital P-25 system.

The P25 board wouldn't have any effect on the ability to trunk. He stated everything worked fine conventionally. Since this thread is now a year old, I imagine he got it working or gave up.

I stand by by original suggestion. I have every CSP frequency programmed into my 796, as I travel up to Hartford often. On one trip I had the scanner on but hadn't received a single CSP radio transmission. I checked the status of the P-25 board and it was disabled (how it got disabled I can't say). But I enabled the P-25 board and began receiving normally.

Bob, you say you have every frequency programmed in, so turn off that Plan 2 CC Only nonsense and make sure your P-25 board is enabled.

The problem with having EVERY freq in a multisite SmartZone system programmed in the SAME bank is that your radio is sometimes able to receive more than one control channel depending on your location and you might not be aware of which site its locked on.

If you had an system designed with a NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, WEST and CENTRAL site, you very well MAY be able to pick up the controls for each of those sites while in CENTRAL or adjacent sites while on the periphery of another. Just because your scanner may lock into a distant control from a given location doesn't necessarily mean you will hear all of transmitters from that site. This is why you should be listening to the control channel specific for your area when you are in certain areas (or the one with the best signal). The entire area (N,S,E,W and C) may be simulcast but if you are physically located in SOUTH and your scanner has locked on (and is trunking) NORTH (and you don't even realize it) you won't necessarily be able to receive each transmitter on the NORTH site from your location. Even though you are receiving some of the freqs traffic you may be missing others. This is why you should probably NOT program all freqs of a multisite system in the same bank.

If you are short on space as far as banks go for separate systems, you are probably better off programming all of the control channels (of each site) in the same bank and changing PLANs (if necessary) to receive the appropriate site as you travel, otherwise, dedicate a single bank to each site separately and you will have control of the whole system.

My guess is (if your radio isn't trunking properly) is that you are locked onto the wrong control for the area you are in and can't pick up each of that sites transmitters and are missing transmissions. Either improve your antenna system or listen to a different site on the SmartZone system.

if you are receiving birdies on control channels, something is not right.
i have had a few people tell me that they are hearing carriers on some of the channels. one person works in westbrook near the mall and it stops the radio all of the time. (the freq was 866.750)
because he had a vc 250d, i thought maybe it was the card. so he bought a bc296- same problem.
after hearing that uniden had a firmware update for the digital card in 296,i offered to update it- he still has the same problem.
the only reason i put all of the state police channels in the same bank, is because its hard to program 15 or 16 zones into a 10 bank scanner. putting them all into the same bank was the next logical (test) at the time and it seems to work ok. you just have to know where your data channels are located.

I'm having a similar issue with a BC296D scanner... I have a question though. Is it possible to program in the control channels for each of the the zones and then just unlock them when you travel into each zone and run the scanner in control channel mode? For example I live in New London County so I would program in 868.3375 and 867.625 in channel 1 and 2 and set up band plan 2 for control channel only mode. In channel 3 and 4 I would program in Windham Country frequencies 867.200 and 867.5875 and leave them locked out until I traveled into that area... Would this work?

It is a moot point at this time, because I can't hear anything... But I just received my scanner and I am 100 feet from a Nextel tower... So I will see how it works when I leave work.

Thanks!

:) About all I Can say 418 Is That I have Programmed In All Of The CSP Freqs Conventionally, The Particular Freq's For My Area, I Put In Each Bank 3-10 In Order To Have The Coverage. Overall, I Locked Out The PITA Ones, Data Etc Very Few Mind You & I Have No Probs With Reception, Except For The Annual Pesky Atmospheric Hang Ups That seem Inherent To this Radio.

Patience Is A Virtue with This For Sure

Yes, I do this frequently when I'm travelling through CA. You should have no trouble as long as the correct band plan is set for the control/system you are actively tracking.

bobmich52: There is a firmware update to the 796 that takes care of the birdies (at least it did for 866.3)

Am I understanding you right that your radio is STILL not trunking this system?

Why don't you:
1. clear a bank
2. program the ONE active control channel for the site nearest you in that bank IN TRUNKING MODE.
3. Make sure the bank is set to the appropriate trunk type (Motorola II).
4. Pick a PLAN type under CONTROL CHANNEL ONLY
5. Press TRUNK then SEARCH (or whatever the key sequence is to start trunk tracking in search mode)
6. Cycle through the remaining PLANS until you find the one that works.
7. Report back your results.

:) JC, Sounds Good To Me, But They will Be Rebanding Out This Way & Since I Do Not Have The Arc Software/Cables Etc, One Is Reluctant To Put Any More $$$$ into The 796's I Have Until I See Which way They do things On Rebanding. Scanner Works Great With Just Programming In The CSP Freqs One By One, A PITA, But by Having a Practiced Ear, Have Had Scanners Since The Crystal /Regency Days, I Hear what I Need To. Uniden Generally Has A Monopoly On Scanners, Rat Shack Does Not Program/Sell Digital Scanners In My Area, Digital Can Only Be Bought Over The Net. Uniden Knows This And Could Give A Damn Less, Just Sell It & Forget About The Consumer. Uniden Customer Service SUCKS :!: :!:

I always choose Plan 2 when I program my scanner in trunking mode on the Michigan State system. The major difference between the plans is which offset frequencies they use during trunking. Plan 2 is the "all-inclusive plan" and allows the scanner to switch to any "working" frequency.

An added benefit of using Plan 2 is that if one of the towers adds frequencies and needs to switch to a different plan, you would not have to do anything to your scanner.

I have only control channels programmed in (in different banks) and do not program in all of the frequencies associated with the towers (that's an unnecessary waste of time).

Not sure what you are talking about "$$$$"

Nothing I suggested cost a thing. Except maybe 5 minutes of your time.
