Uniden BC125AT programming

I have not purchased this scanner yet (BC125AT) but can anyone answer this ?
If one chooses to charge the NiMH batteries EXTERNALLY, how long will the programmed information be retained . Will you loose all of it when removing the batteries, or will you have enough time to insert two more fresh batteries without loosing anything ??

I use an external charger for my batteries. When my BC125AT starts beeping to let me know the batteries need changing, I shut the scanner off, change the batteries, and start the scanner up again.
It starts up right where I left it when I turned it off.......scanning.

Works every time....
