Do you agree there is something wrong, and I should contact Uniden to see if I can get a replacement unit?

Absolutely. I've had my 125 for over two years, and never had a problem using AA alkaline batteries to power the radio. I just used it this past weekend. Ran it for over 6 hours while out and about. Only one bank was used, but it was busy with traffic. Batteries are still good.
I would recommend calling Uniden to find out what to do.

On the new Uniden 325P2 digital scanner I get about 6 hours on Energizer 2300mah batteries, this model is big bro to the 125.....I also had a Uniden 246xt which used (2) batt and lasted about 9 hours but did not do digital....

I would agree that since you seem to think you're also getting bad performance on alkalines as well, then that would indicate not a charge issue. But... I would also advocate getting something like the LaCrosse charger, no matter what. It's way better than the cheap chargers. You can bring old batteries back to life, and it just works way better.
