I was thinking of saving a few bucks on ebay to get this to monitor state police. Is it any good or should I save my $$?

Well, its a good scanner but this model was the 1st in the line of digital scanners. The only drawback is you need to buy a digital card separate from scanner purchase. my suggestion would be to buy a pro 96 radio shack which will automatically decode the apco 25 voice transmissions. I own one and love it!! If you buy uniden only, then go with the bc296d which has the card built in. But you still need to manually adjust the voice every time a signal comes in to hear it normally. Hope this helped!

No......

Soupster,
I had a 250D and I tried to monitor the CT State Police but it did not work well.
It sounded very choppy, like a cheap cell phone. I was ready to throw it out the window.
Its a good non-digital radio though.
As Moonie mentioned, the PRO-96 is a much better choice.
Audio is very good, the software is inexpensive, and it decodes digital very well.
I strongly recommend the PRO-96 to everyone.
Keep you eyes open for some used ones around $325-$350.
Best of Luck.....

Another thing to think about is the rabanding of 800. I have not seen any information on how it will impact the SP but my guess is that they are going to be impacted and then 250 will not work. I know they are limited with their current system with respect to available RF so I would think they would look into obtaining some of the new frequencies available from the rebanding. I remember reading that the NEXTEL/FCC deal for 1.9 included money from NEXTEL to allow all existing 800 systems to modify their system for the rebanding change. Maybe someone else with more knowledge can elaborate.
