If its an 800mhz system then the radio shack 800mhz antenna would be a good place to start.

I am in Edmonton also, and on my BC785 I have a Diamond Discone D130J. I got it from Alfa radio, it was just under $200 I think. It is the most kick ass antenna I think you can buy for wideband general purpose scanning. Mount it nice and high on a mast and you will be amazed at what you can hear. I know more than a few people here in Edmonton with this antenna, and I think they will all agree it is damn nice...

There have been times when (I live downtown) I have been able to pick up Westlock and Mayerthorpe RCMP, depending on propogation.

I use different antennas on many of my different scanners (I think at last count I was at 11... or 12... I don't know any more...), but it all depends on what I am monitoring. I have some 155mhz stubby antennas for monitoring RCMP while mobile that are about 2.5 inches long. I also like my skyscan antenna I got from the UK, you can check it out here http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=29733&&source=14&doy=search
