For those of you using the BC796D and are experiencing problems of talkgroup signals not locking and possibly poor sound quality adjustment the following post may be helpful.
Unless Uniden has upgraded the software for the BC796D as loaded it has a deficiency. The receiver has problems properly processing talkgroups 40,000 and above. The city of Hopewell uses 40,000 and Va. Beach uses the 60,000 range. Uniden has been aware of the problem for some time and had a website where the flash upgrade could be downloaded.
I experienced problems in trying to receive the Hopewell PD. Talkgroup signals would chop and not lock. After downloading and installing the upgrade I had no problem receiving Hopewell and had only to slightly change a quality sound adjustment setting.
See my post under "Forums" and "Uniden Scanners" 10 Nov 04 on this webpage for more discussion on the subject.
If you cannot locate the software by emailing Uniden you can contact me as I saved the upgrade and can email it. This assumes you have a RS232 cable and your computer hardware /software supports serial data transfer.
Additionally, in my opinion, the BC796D installation, setup and file transfer software on the CD ROM provided by Uniden is a piece of crap. I wasted 2 weeks trying to get it to work on two different computers supported supposedly the operating systems (Win 98 second edition and Windows ME) software. Fortunately I found out about ARC250. I have had no problems using ARC250. It is great and reasonably priced available at <www.butel.nl> File editing and transfer now to the BC796D is very easy.
