Hi All-

Been reading through the forums like crazy, and I'm thinking about picking up a Uniden BC898T from a friend. I've had scanners in the past, but nothing with trunking capability. I'm mostly interested in listening to the local SO (Contra Costa County, CA) ,county fire, nearby aircraft, and maybe some CHP...

Will this be an appropriate first (modern) scanner? I consider myself above-average in the tech department, Also, will this unit be compatible with my current needs?

Thanks in advance.

Yes. That radio is an excellent choice for someone getting into trunktracking scanning. Your county is still analog EDACS, so don't worry about hearing anything. Fairly easy to program and use. Used to have it's older brother--BC895. For further questions, I suggest that you go to the California Forum and ask more questions there. I am sure that there are those who will even help you program the scanner:)
HTH,
