Hi WOULD anyone know the difference of the serial numbers beginning with 378Z AND 378A on the Uniden BCD996P2 ???
I'm curious as to what is the difference in the 2 different numbers is one scanner actually more perferred than the other ?

Thanks
Ron

Is there any information about the A new hardware revisions Any links?
.
On scanners that are still in production after a long period of time, (8+ years for the BCD996P2) some of the hardware components spec'd for the original production runs simply reach EOL and need to be replaced with current equivalent parts to continue production. FCC re-certification for compliance is sometimes needed as well as firmware updates to address the updated hardware components. This often happens with no intended or noticeable changes in features or performance.

Check this Uniden firmware changelog link for the 996P2 and read the "Housekeeping" notes for firmware v1.10.01 ( Released 10/08/21) and v1.09.12 (Released 6/25/21).

I have 2 older 996P2's with the "Z" designation, and 2 recent 996P2's with the "A" designation. They run side by side with the same current firmware (v1.10.02) with no difference in features or performance.

Given the dates that the firmware was updated to accommodate the new production hardware, there may not be any of the older "Z" units left in current, new stock.

OK. How about a serial number that begins with ... 378010......?

It also has a firmware version of ... 1.10.05 ... That version does not show up on the list of updates for the 996P2.

Any ideas?

Let me update this. I apparently wrote the ESN number above. I would swear the screen showed just the SN not ESN. But I am always wrong.

But what about the firmware update?

The serial number is on the rear of the scanner. The display shows the electronic serial number. You should update the firmware to the latest version (1.11.04). If you have a newer scanner, the firmware on your scanner was probably created to accommodate hardware changes in the scanner. Those changes will be incorporated in later firmware versions.

I figured out the difference between the ESN & SN. The firmware number for my scanner is not mentioned on the list of updates on RR.

I have that firmware # because there are updated parts inside??? I did read about EOL parts that need replacing.

One last question. When I update the firmware to current levels will it update 'all' the updates listed? Huh, I guess not since my scanner is new (2024) and probably already has the older updates included.
