Well,

I'm up and running, finally. As stated, the Garmin GPS and Uniden serial cable for the 396XT is not compatible with the 325P2. I contemplated changing everything and using my Home Patrol-1 as my mobile scanner but it wasn't what I really wanted. I bought the Uniden GPS as well as the Uniden adapter cable as mentioned above. I did encounter one more problem and that is the cigarette adapter plug that comes with the GPS won't work with the adapter cable, as the cable has a standard USB connection. Thankfully I had a USB/ DC adapter that works fine with this. Thanks to everyone for their help. Finally, I wish I knew why the Uniden BCD325 P2 changed to a different USB port on this scanner when the serial cable still works with just about every other GPS capable scanner, including the 436 and 536HP's?

Glad to hear you are up and running.

I believe that Uniden changed the port in response to user comments. The 325 is the next version of the 396XT scanners. The 396's had a funky cable/port system that was a bear to connect to a computer for programming purposes. Adapters/special cables were needed along with software/drivers. Since more people do computer programming than use GPS, Uniden probably opted for the most predominant use.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the newer USB port on the 325P2 is different in size than the 396, 996, 436, 536, and both HP models. The serial cable still works with GPS for those models.

None of the XT models have USB ports at all. They all use RS232 serial.

HP models have USB for PC connection but retain the RS232 port for GPS.

BCD996P2 and BCD325P2 both abandon the RS232 port (front port on the 996) in favor of a USB connection (but the BCD996P2 retains a DB9 RS232 connection on the rear cabinet).

The 325 IS a USB port. The others are semi-proprietary for the GPS connection.

The one on the 325 is the exact same as the 436, 536, 996p2, HP2, HP1 and any other standard USB.

The ones on the 396 and 996 were the odd ducks.

My terminology with ports, etc, wasn't expert by any means but I think everyone understood the issue. Thanks again for everyone's help and input with this thread. UPMan, any idea if a newer model GPS is in the works for these scanners that does not require an additional cable and the USB to DC adapter required to use it?

As the issue is the GPS port, the 436 and HP1 have the older style connector. The USB port on those models is used for charging and data communications, not GPS. But they all have Mini USB connectors.

And Junior - you need a GPS that has a NMEA output. And unless it has internal batteries it will need external power.
