Uniden bcd396xt "charge off" problem

My Uniden BCD396XT has apparently developed a problem where the display reads "charge off" when connected to its power supply and in the off mode. The switch in the battery compartment is properly in the NiMH mode and not in the alkaline battery mode. Any thoughts ?

Did you try "exercising" the battery switch in case it's oxidized?

Are there batteries in it? What type?

The switch has been exercised and there are NiMH batteries inside

I just retried exercising the switch and it seems to be working properly now. Amazing how it just takes a little extra work
