BTW, the complaints of issues with the 436 are pretty overblown IMO.

True, it has it shortcomings but so do the GRE's which I've also had. I prefer to use a radio that does not require inline filters and playing with attenuator settings. I'm happy with the 436 where I live.

The RAM mount system is modular; you can mix and match the mount, the connecting double-socket arm, and mounting base. If you want to mount a phone or GPS navigation device, you could do something like this (going from top down):

2x finger grip mounts linked in previous post
Amazon.com: National Products RAM-B-111B 6 1/4" X 2" Ram Marine Universal Base with Ball: Sports & Outdoors (connects finger grip brackets together adapts to top ball)
Amazon.com: Ram Mount Composite Short Double Socket Arm for 1-Inch Ball Bases: GPS & Navigation (connects top ball to bottom ball)

and 1 of the following:
Amazon.com: RAM Twist-Lock Suction Cup Base with 1 inch Ball: Computers & Accessories (bottom ball to suction cup)
or
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004O8LF26/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (bottom ball screw mounted to center console or dash)

You can go with other options for the base, and longer connecting arms are available. But shorter arms are more rigid; use the shortest one that will position your device(s) as desired.

Got my 436 a couple hrs ago from the ups man. First thing I did before even turning it on was to copy everything from the original SD card to an 8gb class 10 card. After that, I set it up with my zip code to only scan fire and law enforcement & I'm really impressed with it so far. Digital sounds really good with my radio shack 800mhz antenna. I'll delve more deeply into it as time goes by, but this thing's a fun and easy way to listen to the things you want out of the box.

From what I read in this forum, it seems as soon as you hook up the bcd436 to a computer to update the firmware, the radio's receiving ability quickly diminishes. I plan to buy the scanner in the future, but make all updates manually and never connect it to the computer.

That is not true of all units/users. My 436HP has the latest firmware and no reception issues.

I received mine a couple weeks ago with the latest firmware & no reception problems at all. In fact, all I primarily use with it is the radio shack 800mhz rubber ducky & it'll pick up everything I listen to.

You need to improve your reading comprehension:)

#1 as John stated - not true.

#2 - Firmware will NOT automatically update - user must select it and instruct it to.

#3 - by the time you buy one it MAY have the current firmware installed.

Download Sentinel and "play" with it ahead of time.

Is that even technically possible?

Unless the firmware update is enabling the attenuator function, how would that be feasible?

I'm not saying it can't happen, but how would it?
