Sitting at work with my scanner and all the sudden silence... I can see it is scanning but I am getting no sound, key beep or transmissions. I turned it off and on, reset it and nothing. Hasn't been dropped. I baby this thing. Has anyone else experienced an issue like this?

No, but try the headphone jack.

Don't have a set of headphones on me at work to test that out but no audio what so ever. Even when I turn the unit on, there is no key beep like there normally is. I am in Newark, NJ so there is certainly plenty of chatter. I can see the scanner picking up channels and talk groups but no audio.

When you get home, take your headphones and try plugging them in then out, then repeat a couple of times. Occasionally, we've seen posts where the headphone jack gets stuck as if a plug was still in it, disabling the speaker. If that does not work, see if you hear anything through the headphones when it appears to stop on a channel.

Coming home from work, I used the headphone jack and there is audio only when using the headphones. I tried what you said plugging them in a out several times and to no avail. Looks like my speaker may be shot. How that happened, I will never know... I did notice the past week when using the scanner the audio quality wasn't the best. Now off to try to find someplace to get it fixed. Any insight on that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all for your previous responses.

The problem may be as simple to resolve as cleaning the headphone jack with contact cleaner. The switch that turns on and off the speaker may have dirty contacts due to the lack of a cover. Be careful as some contact cleaners will destroy some plastics.

Split the case open and try cleaning the speaker contacts... They are spring type arms that connect the speaker
when the case is put together...
Just keep the front of radio down when taking apart... All the keypad stuff will stay in place then...

I'm starting to have the same problem. Only had mine for about 8 months now the sound is getting worse. About a week ago the sound was no longer understandable above 3/4 volume. Now it looks like 1/2 volume. It's like the speaker is giving out.

Nope. About 95% of the time the culprit is oxidation on the speaker spring contacts and/or the circuit board pads, or metal particles on the surface of the speaker. If you clean the contacts and maybe bend the spring contacts out a little, and use a magnet to get everything off the surface of the speaker, that almost always fixes the problem. Unscrew the 6 screws on the back of the scanner and the front faceplate will come off. Just note the positioning of key membrane and keypad, and put masking tape on the LCD and bezel to prevent dust specks from getting stuck between the two where you can't clean it off with the scanner assembled.
