I have my scanner hooked to an external antenna and at times when the digital stations are broadcasting it cuts up. Is there something i can do to make it come in better?

'cuts up'?? If you mean it gets interrupted, look to see if the priority, weather scan, Close Call, ect. have been turned on. There's been several messages about this very topic.

If you mean it sounds kinda distorted, you need to access the AGC menus and change the P25 level on the system you have programmed. You might even try asking about what levels folks use in your state's forum. That can often be a good place to start, but you might find that it would need some additional tweaking.

thanks mike, you were correct i mean't it was breaking up not cutting up. i downloaded updates from uniden and it helped. i'm still not sure how to set the P25, i will get it eventually. when i get some extra time i will look on the scanning site for our state.

Keep in mind too that weather will affect P25 reception, wind moving the antenna (on either end) can affect it as well.

Did you have the scanner near a running PC?

For what its worth, I encountered the very same issue with my BCD996T. Didn't matter the weather, and my external antenna was perfectly fine. Only the P25 transmissions would break up -- every other mode was ok.

I seemed to notice that this annoying breakup occurred more when my computer was on and near to the scanner. I could not prove that was the definite cause though.

As a general rule its really best to keep all radios -- shortwave radios in particular, but also scanners -- far far away from running computers. Some scanners are more prone to interferences than others are. That's been my experience anyhow.

Computers shouldn't affect the scanners unless you have some major issues with the computers shielding. I have 5 scanners sitting on top of one computer and 4 other computers within 2 feet and not one of the scanners is affected by the computers. One has the cover off and still no problems with it.
Also make sure your antenna coax is good quality shielded coax like LMR400 and that power supplies all have torrid cores to eliminate interference issues.
