Uniden bearcat 780 XLT i havnt got a clue

Hello everyone and thanks for looking at my post. I recently got a really good deal on a uniden bearcat 780XLT i rushed home and unboxed the beauty read the user manual turned the little beasty on and.....Nothing. I have read the manual several times and just cant work out how to get it to work. I try to do a "SEARCH" to find active frequencies in my area but every time i follow the instructions in the manual(entering a high and low level frequency to search) i get a message on the screen which says "ERROR NO LIMIT DATA"
Is there any where on the net or any book i could buy thats a little better to understand than the user manual????

First, welcome to the site.

The easiest way to find active frequencies in your area is thru the RR database. You did not indicate your location, but by accessing the database page (link at the top of the page), you can find active frequencies in your area by city, county, and agency. This would be more informative than searching for any active frequency, without knowing what it was and whether or not it would ultimately be interesting at all. If you indicate your location, then a post to the appropriate state or region forum would get you additional frequency tips.

There is a wealth of general information in the RR Wiki, link at the top of the page, for new scanner users. As far as a specific book on scanners, I have not personally read one, though there is one in the ubiquitous "Dummies" series.

If you would still like to try a search, the 780XLT also has pre-programmed service search. Hold down the SRCH key for 2 second. You should get a display with a choice of pre-programmed search ranges, the first of which is public safety. After three seconds, the scanner should begin searching the range of normally assigned public safety frequencies.
