This is like watching a dog chase his tail. The drivers are on the Uniden website at the URL posted earlier in this thread. Those should work unless your PC is trying to use a different set of drivers for some reason.

hey thanks again for your sarcasm, I finally figured out with the help of a fellow scanner enthusiast

go the upman's link, if you install the usbuser, and do the bcvup update. then, goto device manager with the cord plugged in and uninstall the 436 driver. unplug and replug in the cord, then click update driver, manaully select usbuser and it will update, I no longer have bricks.

So after you did that how is your 436 working when connected?

BCD996P2 need user hands on info

Thinking of upgrading to this from BC-700. Big technological jump, is sensitivity and selectivity better on vhf on these new models? mostly analog right now but that could change anytime, Thanks, Larry

Not necessarily. About all of them since the 700 have been concentrating on trunked or digital trunked reception which tends to fall in the 700-900mz range, or at least un the UHF category, above 300mz. Some are about the same on VHF and some may have suffered just a little.

I would not be upgrading if my efforts were to improve VHF reception only.

On the other hand, newer radios are light years improved in lots of other ways.

Both BCD996P2's came today and I attempted to program them off of the computer using FreeScan. I followed the You-Tube videos and when I was all done a message prompted up off the screen no drivers are detected. I attached the two files off of Uniden (usbser.zip) but neither one of them would do anything except open up and display a lot of computer jargon. What do you think I'm doing wrong?

Not installing the drivers correctly. When you connect the scanner, and it asks for the driver location, select the folder where you unzipped the usbser.zip file.

The funny thing is, the Uniden files didn't unzip. I wasn't able to so I copied and pasted them to a folder on the desktop. When I go to my computer, the scanner is not recognized. Very frustrated. Ugggggg.

On top of that - Freescan (latest 2.17) will not support it until it gets revised. Hopefully soon.

Did you see my reply - Freescan will NOT work - until it gets updated (Freescan not the 996)

You either do it by hand or buy Arc. (or the demo)

I'll try again, I really appreciate your prompt responses. I'm dying to see the difference in this scanner compared to my Fred Flinstone model.

Freescan should be able to be updated in an hour or so once it gets worked on.

Still, you need a working connection first.

I looked into ProScan and downloaded the free trial version. I believe I'm unable to program my Uniden scanner through ProScan unless I purchase it for $50.00. The program does recognize the BCD996P2 unit, and at this current time, the $50 will be well worth the money to program two scanners.

Does anyone have any Pro's/Con's with ProScan?

I've always heard good things about it except for the price. The license lets you install it on two PC, I think. But, if you want to install it on more, like for streaming from one PC to two others, you need to buy another license for 2 PCs. That can add up quickly.
