Hmmm...been out 4 days and no other replies? Well here goes mine...
Downloaded the update Friday and was all set to be impressed. Unfortunately it didn't go as planned. Followed the "suggested" settings then opened up my Starcom 21 systems (Site 102...CC 774.34375) and was thinking "maybe this will be it". Within 5 minutes, the garbling started (Those in simulcast site hell will understand), and the same symptoms were there. Also tried the settings on my 396XT and had the same issue, so ruled out outdoor antenna issues, etc.
Next step...time to tweak!!! Have been doing this over the past 3 days and have had no luck. I can't say it's worse, but not better as I expected. I was thinking Uniden was going to add some algorithm or some other "internal tweak" that would help decipher these systems better. Adding the P25 Adjust Level and P25 Adjust Mode settings were in the 996T already and was problematic then too on this site. I've had a few others with these scanners in this area previously had the issue too, so ruled out my scanner or location.
Next step was to watch the ERR rate as it monitored the system. For those that have never expierienced a true simulcast system, it's pretty wild to watch. ERR codes will flucuate from 0-64 all in one transmission...hence the garble and inaudible. What's funny though, with the Radio ID feature, you will still see the unit transmitting, but no audio coming out of the scanner. (Ex..Display will show Chgo. C-Disp console transmitting...ERR will show 64-48-24-0. {No audio...garble, garble...transmission cleaerer, clear as a bell}.
In my unprofessional, non-Uniden bashing opinion (Still like the DMA scanners from Uniden), it won't hurt the scanner to download the update. As I have known from many years, these simulcast systems are very "location-dependent" as to your individual reception. If you're in an area like mine (Chicago-west of Midway Airport), you will probably have similar symptoms. If you're in an area that doesn't have this many sites firing different transmissions at your scanner at the same time, you won't have any issues. Many are reporting better results in diffrerent areas. Obviously, no one tested here. I guess i'll just have to wait for the Uniden super-duper digital decoding scanner to come out to get the optimum results I seek.
