I currently have a Uniden Home Patrol HP-1 that I use to monitor the Minnesota ARMER System, which is a digital, trunked simulcast system on 800 mHz. I am currently using a commercial 800 mHz rubber duck gain antenna inside the vehicle. If I connect the HP-1 to a VHF 1/4 Wave mobile antenna on a trunk lip mount, will this improve my reception on 800 mHz?. Obviously, I know that an antenna designed for 800 mHz would be better, but I am simply wondering is a 1/4 wave VHF outside will get more signal than an 800 mHz rubber duck inside the vehicle?

JASII i should give you advanced warning that persnickety Police in Minnesota who have nothing to do can pull you over and confiscate your scanner it varies from State to State and some times Town to Town it got so bad a number of years ago the F.C.C Made a pre emptive LAW that possession of an Amateur Radio License Voids any state vehicle and traffic code that says "scanners" or radios capable of receiving "Police Communications" Did not apply to Federally licensed Amateur Radio Operators but if you are not an Amateur they can if they stop you for any reason also confiscate any and all radio's or scanners in your vehicle and without proof of holding a valid Amateur Radio License on the date and time they got snatched you will never get them back(proof to them is checking the Universal License System of the F.C.C not the copy you carry in your wallet) they say that only criminals would want to listen to the police and drive around so they could commit crimes, well every cop car should have a tow hitch on it with somebody making donuts in a trailer to but thats not required and gee officer your eyes look a little glazed did you get enough sleep? ,rotten jokes but thats profiling and if they can do it so can we! so just be careful with your radio if your getting pulled over for something in an area that you don't go to often lower the volume and don't draw attention to the fact that your listening.

Peace
