Hi all. I was looking to upgrade from my 10 year old Pro-96 scanner to something newer. Sometimes I can only hear half of the conversation on my scanner and im not sure what the problem is. Anyhow, I am wondering what you all would think to be a better replacement. I am trying not to go over $500. I am leaning toward the Uniden Home Patrol. My main scanning would be of LAPD and Sheriff.

What are your thoughts on this? Thanks and have a wonderful week.

In the long term, I think you'd be happier with a more functional radio like a GRE PSR 600 or a Uniden radio. What ever you decide to buy, be sure to get programming software because it makes life a lot easier with today's radios and complex systems, such as trunking.

You should be able to get a good radio for under $500; for example, Scanner Master sells the GRE PSR 600 for about $360. Also, try e-bay stores for discount sellers.

You might want to look at the specific radio model forums. Many Home patrol users have not been pleased with their radios.

I just bought another GRE PSR 600 to add to my stable. I found this one on Amazon.com where I have bought before from a company called OnlineBest Deals. 340.00 bucks and I got it delivered in two days via USPS Priority Mail.

I also bought the 3 scanner base model mount from Scannermaster which is sweet. I have two GRE PSR 600's and I have one more slot. This might hold the GRE PSR 900 soon. Who knows.

For a mobile I have had the Uniden 396XT and the GRE PSR 800 and I sold the 800 because it was a battery hog and I like to program my scanners manually with software. Plus the 800 had a lot of interference in the Orange County area while I was driving on the highways. Sold it and parted ways.

Then I finally found the best scanner mobile for me which was the Radio Shack PRO 106 which I love and I can listen to it forever and days and days and it doesnt eat up the batteries. Radio Shacks models are made by GRE and the software you buy is inter changable and the programming cables work the same too.
