Uniden introduced a new handheld scanner at the Comsumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week . The BC396T will be 5,500 channels, APCO-25 digital capable, 2 AA Ni-cad batteries included, CloseCall RF Technology, Dynamic Memory Management, and FireTone-Out.
It will list for 850.00 but surely will be discounted.

Wow. A digital scanner that uses regular batteries and a back lit keypad. What a great new concept in scanners. What will they think of next.

Now, the question is, will it have a real on/off switch and a way to turn off the video game sounds?

LOL.... hmmm sounds familiar to the same scanner we have been discussing for a couple of weeks now.... could it be- the BCD396T?????

WEG

As for tone shut off.. one can only hope.. the only one on the market that you can't is the PRO-83.....

And hey guys,.. any of those that read the manual or get this scanner.. tell me how close to right I was on the FD tone out thing.

:)

UPMan says he won't talk about that feature for a while.

I think it'll be a simple pager-type system, where the audio is muted unless it picks up a preselected tone alert... THAT would rock, as my local FD uses a special tone for structure fires vs EMS, and Mrs Dale would much prefer to only hear the scanner in the middle of the night if I'm grabbing it and leaving ;>

LOL since the cat is officially out of the bag...that means a product manual will be on the net real fast.... And I still say its set up to recognize the tone format and you can text tag it...... Which as I siad is cool!

Being able to lable individual VFD's etc..... And being that some LEA's also have this toning for alerting SWAT, etc...... Will be fun to play with anyway.

It takes time to turn a ship around, it was in the not so long ago past when what you got was *all* you got .. no questions asked.

And we griped and complained about how radio mfgs are so out of touch from the real world.

Times have changed. :) All my scanner dollars are now going to Uniden products because they got a spy  in among us and I think that is smart business.

I hear Uniden may start working on the Y2K problem next. It takes to 2005 to start using regular batteries?
Do I have to admit I also have a Pro-83...made by ????? I can't say it!

"that means a product manual will be on the net real fast"

The timeframe from CES announcement of the BC250D (similar press release) to manual on the net was 9 months as I recall... Obviously this one won't be as long since the scanner is scheduled for release in the summer, but from what has been posted from Uniden it's not around the corner either.

You buy what you like, I'll buy what I like. I don't pick on your nice RS scanner(s)..all of which have nice features that some Uni's don't.

I myself am still very excited for this unit, no matter what others have to say. :D

I agree with you. It sounds like this new scanner is going to have some new features that will make it a hit. I had to take the cheap shot as the battery thing used to really bug me. What's more important is, whatever the brand, that there be enough of us to support the companies and give them incentive to bring out updated products.

FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS...

N O

NO

NEGATIVE

ABSOLUTELY NOT

NEVER

In any case, they clearly stated in the press release it won't do ProVoice, so your thread should have been posted as new (or never at all since every thread on ProVoice says "NO")

Fireant.. its nice to hope, to dream...... to be delusional.....

But in the reality of what PV means to M/A-Com..... untill its a dead useless format that has been replaced.. and is on the way to being extinct.... which is still many years off.... Ther will NOT be a PV capable scanner.... for more info.. look up at the big STICKY that Lindsay has posted for you all.... to quote: "No"

Eneough siad....

On the philosophical side, yes we all pray PV will just frigging die a painful but quick death... but thats life.

Are there any pics of the BC396T yet?

Yes - on the Yahoo Group pictures area.
http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/BCD396T/lst

Also, Rob, don't forget that M/A-Com agreed to make a scanner available when they sold the system to PA. They later hinted that they may let an existing manufacturer make it for them. Of course, the status of the PA system is questionable, so

Of all the not-currently-supported systems, Open Sky is one of the most likely to be added.
