If we are all in the "I wish" realm, here is mine:

A blackberry storm 2 (that works properly, all the time) with slide out keyboard, with a full uniden scanner built in that can decode every type of encryption, and every radio system out there, and systems/enc. that eventually show up.

Oh, and a otterbox defender case to hold said device, [/i]and a proper holster for the darn case too! [/i]

(hey, I can dream, no?) lol

I'd be happy with a new firmware update with some features that have been requested. But it does sound like it will be something a bit bigger than than. I don't think it will be a whole new scanner, but maybe something of the remote head/gps/voice recording accessory. It would be neat to have some small accessory (small enough to be usable on a handheld) that I could attach to the radio that would log and record all radio traffic I received on the scanner which could then later be downloaded into a pc for further analysis. gps/time/frequency/etc... would also be logged. Not only would this be fun to replay some of those funny and exciting things heard on the scanner, but would be helpful in identifying traffic on seldom used frequencies or talkgroups since I could let the scanner constantly log/record those while I'm away from the scanner.

The whole idea of logging/recording is not something I'd call 'revolutionary', but putting it into a small portable accessory, i think, is.

Here is my guess. A scanner that also does WiFi and can listen to icecast feeds and connects to the RadioReference live audio in a way similar to the many iPhone apps out there.

I'd also like to see a remote head can be used over the Internet and do some type of realtime VoIP for audio. This would be great if you wanted to put a scanner in another city and be able to monitor them on a remote head like you were actually there.

OK. Enough dreaming for me :)

I think ICOMS been making those for years so that wouldn't be too revolutionary :)

V

Icom's radios are receivers, not scanners. They are also much more expensive, don't have trunking, many don't have PL or DPL. Not the same thing at all. To put wireless control into a scanner, would in fact, be pretty revolutionary.

He said it was being upgraded to a barbeque. So it looks like a gas grill with a scanner built in it that runs on propane....no more rechargable batteries needed! A peach cobbler recipe will be included in one of the menus. Just reading between the lines!

hmmm, seems to me mine scans, it also does trunking if you use the right software and it will even do digital with the right upgrades, even covers more frequencies than most scanners.... and I'm sure some enterprising sole could come up with a wifi adapter if there was enough call for it. Oh, they have dpl pl as well, and since they can scan and recieve I'd call it a scanner too......and it's ICOM, all computer controlled just depends on the software as to what it can do :)

That still doesn't make it a scanner. Yes it can scan through frequencies, but not as efficiently as a scanner - and if you need to use extra software to enable trunking.. well, that still doesn't make it a trunking scanner.
Icoms are great at what they do - but they're receivers first and foremost.

How about other digital/trunking systems like:
MotoTrbo
Tetra (making more inroads in the USA lately)
D-star decoding for those hams looking for it
etc
etc
etc

Hmmm, then I guess the Uniden scanners are just recievers too by your discription since they require firmware, which technicaly IS software. And the ICOM is just as efficient at scanning if set up properly, and in some cases actually scans faster than any of my scanners do. The person whom I was responding to originaly though specificaly stated using computer control which this does fall under so there goes your argument completely.... now, back on topic the Uniden Open House.... wish I could make the trip, but sadly it's not in the budget at the moment :(

I'd pass on that, propane costs too much.....lol

Not sure if you scanner/hams out there are familiar with liveblogging but why doesn't one of the attendee's setup a twitter account and hit the rest of us who can't make it with updates, pictures, etc... Its easy and free and will go along way to help spread the word and excitement for uniden.

I have a feeling that Uniden won't allow that since the official information release date is a few days later.

Upman and other uniden employees can not tell RR members information about upcomming radios, or GPS receivers or what ever Uniden is going to announce at the BBQ. RR members that attend the Uniden BBQ can tell the rest of us what uniden is going to release in the near future, because Uniden is releasing that information to the public at the BBQ. Unless they make you sign paper stating that you cannot tell anybody about up comming releases. I don't believe this will happen.
