Uniden or PRO-96

Since I have to go digital to get the Kenner PD. Is the PRO-96 the best product or does Uniden have an equal model that is as good or better. The PRO-96 goes for $500.00 so I want to make the best investment but I don't know enough about Uniden. Thanks.

I'm more than satisfied with my PRO. I have had Uniden products in the past, and have also been happy with them.

The primary selling point on the PRO was that an APCO decode card was not necessary. At around $300, this was a major plus.

I have just found out that Kenner is back on the JPSO APCO system. I have entered all JP frequencies, and have located only three KPD groups. I still keep the Kenner freqs in an unused bank, just in case they revert back to their own system in the future.

Now waiting for a ProVoice upgrade for NOPD.

I have owned both. I originally bought a Uniden 250-D with the card when they first came out. It worked, but I live in the outskirts of my digital area, so even after buying two or three different outdoor antennas, I couldn't pick the system up from my house too well. I decided to try a PRO-96 and it works/receives 10 times better. It also has the added feature of being able to program from your PC, which I like a LOT. The uniden supposedly had the same feature, but I could never get it to work.

I sold my Uniden on Ebay. Good riddance. I always heard they were superior, but I didn't find that to be the case. Maybe it was because it was the first one they came out with, but I feel like I wasted nearly $800!!! That's not including the multiple antennas, too.

Go Radio Shack. They're cheesy, but it's a good unit and it has the support behind it, too.

I have both models and the 96 is superior. Audio quality and reception are both better, and the V-folders are a really usefull.

In that little section of the world where you apparently are, there are enough different systems that you can monitor that V-Folders can come in real handy. Yes, I know it won't do you any good for NO Pub Safety or St. Tammany, but then again no currently produced scanner will. Setting up V-Folders for Baton Rouge, Mississippi, Lafayette, .... well you get the idea. The advantage to V-Folders (a topic little understood until you use them) is the ability to set up the radio like you always live in Baton Rouge and then store that on the radio for recall later when you travel there. You can store 10 different setups and of course the current one in the radio (which would would save to the Scratch Pad before loading a different one.) Mo really didn't do the folders justice with that comment.

i think im gonna go with a pro-96 then also, i have a pro 95 right now but its getting crappy. Theres a wire that goes from the board to the antenna but it keeps coming off even after fixing it. so im gonna stick it in a closet for an extra radio.
