I sometimes wonder why UPMan bothers posting here.

Because he, like us, cares.

As for people complaining about this and that, what I love most are the ones who complain about both. That tells you who the haters are. Why doesn't Uniden have USB? Why doesn't Uniden have serial? Those are the people who only post to complain.

There are some people who have legitimate complaints, and the x36 line does have more than its share of issues (fortunately only affecting a small number of units), but many people don't read, read but don't understand, or simply don't want to understand what Uniden posts in their updates. Uniden has been nailed (insert correct fastener term if you like) in this fiasco, too. It's not as if they have had any choice in the matter. They made the product announcement in good faith not realizing that the WiFi manufacturer didn't have a fully supported product. Had their received everything when they expected it, I have no doubt it would have made the Q1 2014 deadline.

But when people complain that Uniden didn't halt everything while they wait on firmware from a third party? That again is an indication of someone who only posts to complain - a hater.

AOR, icom, I think Yupiteru might still be around. SDRs if you want to get technical.

You could also say many of the Chineese ham rigs could be competition.

And after all that, my 796D is still the best receiver of the bunch. Pulls in distant trunks that HP-1 and 996T can't hear.
PSR-800 is very strong on 800 MHZ, and the best of all is probably the PRO-96.

So why can't Uniden make a sensitive radio?

My PRO-96 POS on a simulcast system is why I stopped buying their scanners. Worthless- you make me laugh SCOSGT if the PRO-96 is the best of the lot!

Sensitive receivers overload faster, as many have found with the more sensitive receivers such as the 96/800. When they happens, you hear much less.

There are stations I can be 5 miles from that I can hear FQ on a Uniden that a 96/500 cannot hear due to overload.

I said SENSITIVE.

Obviously the 96 may not perform on newer digital systems.

scosgt - sorry, didn't see the word 'sensitive' - yes the 96 is sensitive and good on conventional, it's just CQPSK that it chokes. 436/536 look good, but are they better than the 996XT2 model arriving?

You can defend Uniden all you want. They screwed the pooch not knowing there supplier wasn't capable of delivering. Uniden screwed the pooch advertising right on the dam box a feature that was not there. Which in my book is FALSE advertisement. If Uniden wanted to take care of there customers, there should have offered a partial or full refund on a scanner that wasn't ready for delivery. Haters? NO. Ticked off for spending allot of money on a scanner not capable of the advertised features. They could recoup there losses from the business that didn't deliver, which I presume was under contract. That's between them, not us. Don't whine about so called haters because we all have a legitimate gripe!

The box was made before they knew. As much as I know some people think Uniden should have been able to predict the future, it's just not possible. Besides, they announced the delay of the features before the unit was available, so there was no false advertising. They said it would be released after the unit was in the field. Guess what? It is being released. Uniden has done everything that said they would as soon as they could do it.

Basically the x36HP release was not Unidens best scanner release. So far it has had the following problems:

1. Wi-Fi firmware delays <--resulting in delay of app and analyzer features
2. Headphone repair
3. SD card issues
4. Clock reset issues
5. Backlight display fade issues
6. USB port issues <--only reported by a few
etc, etc

And there were a few minor issues that were somewhat repaired during the last firmware fix involving squelch tail and mobile install of the 536.

Yes the core features work but was it ready for primetime release? Probably not but then again, I'm sure Uniden was unaware of some of these issues until it reached the end users. Maybe in another year it can be called the FlagShip but for right now there trying to prevent the ship from sinking. I'm sure it could have used a longer testing phase but that wouldn't have detected all the problems.

NOTE: Not a hatter, just a very frustrated consumer who purchased the scanner primarily for the advertised features.

For word of mouth purposes...Are those 5 issues (excluding #1) likely to plague devices recently purchased? I wasn't sure if there were various manufacturing dates or if that is even relevant.

Recent purchase should be fine. This list is mainly from the original release.

2. Headphone repair - bad batch of jacks
3. SD card issues - could be bad cards or hardware issue
4. Clock reset issues - production issue (AFAIK so far - could be bad batteries?)
5. Backlight display fade issues - bad parts
6. USB port issues <--only reported by a few - the one unknown.

Most of those can be attributed to bad parts. Not sure if Uniden changed who they source parts from, but if so they should change back.

Maybe the infiltration of Chineese knockoff parts is worse than we thought. If so, we may see many more products start to develop issues.

Look at the bad adapters using "FTDI" and "Prolific" chipsets that are cheap clones. Like Uniden, people blame FTDI and Prolific for adapters that don't work reliably. Granted, not the exact same issue, but close.

Odd that the Chineese products themselves are largely unaffected.

My 436 works better out of the box than my RS Pro-668. Saving money now to buy matching 536. I have been using scanners for over 40 years and this is by far the best scanner I have had to date and it all started in 1974 with the regency 10 channel ACT-R10-HLU crystal unit 4-6 thin scan D310 touch 16 m400 hx1000 bc-100 plus several others. I remember when you used an outside antenna to hear 10 miles away this hobby has changed a ton. I remember giving over $300.00 for a 16 channel programmable scanner 30-50MZ 150-170MZ and 450-470MZ. A CB radio 5 blocks away would get in the scanners so bad you could not hear.
