Here's the latest update.

Some of the first units shipped have arrived and are now in the hands of the first group of users. If you have questions, suggestions or any issues at all, please email them to either mancow or me at the below email addresses. This is the fastest way to get answers to any questions that you may have. The main cables required are a USB type C cable - this is used to power the raspberry PI, the connector is on the top of the Raspberry PI, on the far left side if you're looking at the screen. The second cable is the cable to the scanner, for the SDS 200, it is a USB micro cable on the scanner side and a USB A-Male on the Raspberry PI, this is the control cable. For the SDS 100, it is a USB A-Male to a Mini-B. You should have these cables for the SDS 100 & SDS 200, they came with the scanner. These cables connect directly to Raspberry PI on the right side. The connectors that are blue in color on the Raspberry PI are USB 3.0 compatible.

Here are the email addresses for support.

My email address is rayers@touch-scanner.com
mancow's email address is ccrane@touch-scanner.com

Just a quick question, maybe I've missed the info in this thread.

I have managed to build Mancow's first version of the remote head with the Teensy and Nextion Display.

I was wondering if there is also a partslist and software available for this latest version with the RPI.

Have some RPI's here just lying around.

Thanks!

Along the same lines, is there an option to purchase the software only and a hardware list (like a DSD+ FastLane purchasing solution)? Definitely think this project has value that deserves compensation, but I wanted to use a different touch screen (with audio from the scanner), external GPS that is supported, and be able to hide the Pi somewhere in a vehicle. Also this would free up backlog.

Given you will be wired with USB, why not add lines for audio with it.
Something like this should work with any scanner that you can control via USB and software like proscan.

Also you can use VNC viewer and run the whole thing on a phone or tablet. Would need to establish an ad hoc or whatever it's called non infrastructure connection to the pi.

I would like to use ip control and audio but haven't had time to explore how to get that working but no doubt it can be done. If course that only works with the 200.

The RH-96s are getting harder and harder to find. Just saw one on Facebook Marketplace for $250

You aren't going to find any tablet with a 3.5" footprint. With space being such a concern in today's vehicles, this answers a lot of people's needs.
I just bought a 7" TFT display with touch to replace the 4" in an Agilent VNA I have. Something like that would fill the bill for a project like this. Pipe audio into the existing car radio, and you have a great mobile setup.

Is there a link somewhere for this? I can point to this thread easily enough in the wiki, but it would mean a lot more if there was somewhere someone can see something - even a snapshot of a prototype - on this new remote head project

I will work up a user manual and get some pics up soon.

All,

Due to the interest in the thread Jon recently started about a possible Raspberry Pi remote head project, I thought I would post an update on my own project.

In the last several months, I have been working on a remote head project for my BCD996P2. It uses a Raspberry Pi3 as the compute as well as a 480x320 pixel, 3.5" touchscreen. The Pi and screen are mounted in a compact case and the connection to the scanner is via USB. The remote head is for display and control only -- it does not carry audio as that is not possible over USB. It is likely that the project will also work without modification with the BCD326P2 (and possibly other Uniden models that use the same protocol).

My goals were to build a remote head that is very compact but yet still easily readable. I chose to go with the 3.5" touchscreen as it can be mounted directly to the Pi and put into a compact case. It probably wouldn't be hard to support a larger external display though. In some ways a touchscreen isn't ideal for interaction as it doesn't have the tactile feedback that real buttons do but it is FAR easier to create a remote head this way.

The cost of all of the parts is around $100 which includes the Pi, the case, a power adapter for the Pi and the touchscreen.

I have plans to buy a SDS200 in the next several months and adapt the code to it... the challenge will be with the additional display information that is available on the SDS series and getting it to fit into 3.5". Several changes with the SDS version would be: use of Wifi/Ethernet for the remote head connection, possibly a bigger display and the possibility of carrying audio to the remote head.

I consider my current project in "Alpha" state, but it works well enough to control the basics of the scanner. My initial focus has been on mirroring the display and the most frequent actions that a scanner user will perform -- mostly changing volume/squelch and what banks to scan. I have also had fun trying out lots of different color schemes! Here is a description of the current feature set:

- Mirror the scanner's display. It is updated in almost real time.
- Large signal strength meter at the bottom of the screen (this is the one element that is rendered differently than the built-in LCD does)
- Volume up/down controls (Vu and Vd "buttons" in the photos)
- Squelch up/down controls (Su and Sd "buttons" in the photos)
- Hold / Scan controls (H and Sc "buttons" in the photos)
- Priority key (Pri "button" in the photos)
- Lockout key (Lo "button" in the photos)
- Keypad for entering quick keys (for changing banks)
- Ability to change the display colors (I have many built-in color schemes :)

All interaction is done via touch screen. I am still playing around with the user interface but it works like this:
- If you touch the center of the screen then an "overlay" set of important buttons is displayed. These touchscreen buttons provide the main controls of the scanner (e.g. volume up / down). Touching the center again will hide the overlay keys.
- If you touch the upper right corner, it will advance one cycle in the built in color palettes
- If you touch the upper left corner, it will display a dedicated keypad page for entering a quick key. The numbers you enter are shown to the right of the pad. Pressing the "E" (enter) key will exit the keypad mode.
- If you are in hold mode, you can touch the left and right centers of the screen to advance forward and back
- If you are in scan mode, you can touch the left and right centers of the screen to change the scan direction

Photos are attached. Some notes
- You can see how compact the remote head (shown with 996 for relative comparison)
- The overlay buttons are shown in one photo -- descriptions of the button labels are above
- The signal strength meter can be seen in one of the photos (segmented white bars at the very bottom of the display)
- The variety of the color schemes is shown
- The quick key pad is shown. To the right of the keypad is the actual numbers entered ("12" in the photo)

I want to state again that this project is still Alpha and not ready to release in any form. I would like to eventually release the software in the public domain and put together a document on how to self assemble one.

Feedback is welcome, especially in regards to the next set of features to add

thanks

If this project remains underway, may I suggest SDS 100 & 200 have both, the simple & full feature display.
For use as a control head in vehicle, simple display is easiest to read.
Good luck!! 👍🏻

I'll jump on this bandwagon, same question and comments.

OOH! would this work with a 3600XLT? (basically the European version of the 436)?
I have a free Pi3B+ and 7 inch touchscreen that would go nicely with this if the software was made available to purchase ;)

I'm curious as to what this might entail. I had a RH96 and used it for my 396 and then 396XT. While it was handy to use when mobile, it was clearly lacking in some functionality such as being able to remotely power on and off.

The plan is to add RH96 type capability. Again, all comes down to time to get it done.

Remote power is not supported because they never designed it into the radios.

I know that and knew it at the time. For me it wasn't all that much of an issue, but for some people it was a deal breaker. The RH96 had the air of being an afterthought more than part of the initial plan. Again, I liked mine and at one point had two set up to control two portable scanners at my house.

We haven't decided on a distribution method for the software sale alone. We have discussed it and are exploring the different options. As far as a parts list, we can get something together. I'm out of town for a few days but once I get back I will work on it.

I have just received the display unit and it has only been on the way to the Netherlands for about 1.5 weeks!
I hooked it up as described but it doesn't get any further than The Warning picture.
The SDS200E sees the cable and I confirm the serial connection with "."
But then nothing more happens.
Am I missing something ?
