When I sent my 396 in for the silkscreen print issue there were two parts replaced. I seem to recall others mentioning this, with one of the parts being the speaker. Now, whether this was replaced because it was less time-consuming to just replace the speaker as opposed to separating it from the faceplate, or because there was a problem with the audio, I can't say.

I do know that when I got my 396 back, it sounded a little better, but that may just have been the result of my ears getting "tuned" by listening to my old BC200XLT while my 396 was gone. :)

Thanks,

Steve

Despite quite a bit of discussion on the issue, in reality only a very very few have ever sent the radio for warranty service on this.

396 sound repair

I sent my 396 in for no sound ,it came back 5 weeks later with a repair statement saying the sp501 was replaced. I have owned many a scanner in the past 30 years with no problems. I guess my luck ran out when I purchased the 396.I don't think it sounds any better than before it broke, seems to me there should be a recall,if they break after the 1 year warranty, too bad.and yes ther is definitely a problem that should be addressed to all 396 owners.

If you sent this in right after the reports started coming in, it is likely that it was in the shop prior to our identifying the root cause (I have yet to hear one that sounds as bad as some report...including two that have been in for the issue). Speaker replacement would not remedy the issue. Affected units would need to have the audio amp replaced.

Since this does not affect all user's scanners, a recall is not appropriate.

Contact me offline regarding your unit.

i think i have sold about 300 to 400 units and only 2 came back with problems

1 had a silkscreen issue
1 had a speaker problem

all other issues with the unit was the owner not reading the owners manual or taking my advice on downloading the pdf format of the owners manual to help read it better.

UPMan, when will the online manuals and manuals for purchase be updated to reflect current firmware update? When the firmware is all said and done I would like to buy another manual.

My 396 has had a defective Toko TK10565M audio amp from day one. I have had to run the internal speaker on only one side of the amp to eliminate the distortion. I need my receiver here and not at a repair facility. Is Uniden willing to send me a replacement amp? Or point me at a source where I can buy one? I'm not looking for a handout - I just want to fix my equipment ASAP.

We will repair it under warranty. Or, you can purchase the part if you wish to repair it yourself. We cannot offer warranty self-repair (for many, many obvious and not-so-obvious reasons). Contact our Parts group.

There is no recall for speaker or otherwise. If you have audio distortion problems at low volumes, send it in for warranty repair.

I recommend calling rather than using email. They were very good to deal with last time I bought parts.
