No not that I know of, the default is the rotary knob for functions. Scrolling through favorites lists, scrolling through menus Etc.

As already noted, that change is doubtful. Actually, the knob has three different uses:

As is, it allows you to scroll between channels or systems.

Press down, and it switches to volume control.

Or, press the Function key first, and the scroll knob can adjust the squelch.

On the older scanners, Volume became the default function of the knob when Keypad Lock was enabled. If you go to the Tools tab in Sentinel and select BCDx36HP as the Target Model, you can go to the Miscellaneous tab of the Profile Editor and set Keypad Lock to On. When you Write to Scanner, Volume will be the default function of the knob. Unfortunately, you will need your computer to turn off the Keypad Lock to be able to use the keypad again. There is no way to turn off Keypad Lock on the scanner. I don't know why Keypad Lock is not available on the SDS100. It should be!

I think it's already on the wish list, to have it user configurable to be a volume or select as the default.

In professional radios you usually have it configurable in the programming. Of course it will always be fixed to select mode when entering a menu or setting. When you scan and often find that it stops on conversations that you're not interested in you would like it to be in select mode but if you often have different volume levels in different systems, and you don't have any audio AGC like in the SDS scanners, you probably prefer it to have volume as default.

It's a very simple change to the firmware that probably takes 1 minute to do but it is also the menu system and Sentinel that then needs to have that function added. But if the configuration where done as Whistler did with their shortcuts, that are not available in EZ-Scan or the scanners menu system, then it doesn't add much cost in development. Something like holding in the volume control for 2 sec could switch the default operation mode without any more added than a single confirmation beep for one mode and a double beep for the other.
