JUST plugged in or plugged in and turned on? You need it turned on to charge the clock battery.

When I plug mine bcd436hp in to charge the internal battery, it says either mass storage or serial port- I chose serial port but get a notice there is no serial port driver for the BCD436HP then the message battery failure.

You get the no serial port driver on the scanner? You should not. But, that is the correct selection to charge the clock battery (or run the scanner in general).

it is plugged in and I was finally able to unzip the serial port driver.

I was getting the no serial driver error message under device manager till I bought winzip to unzip the usb to serial port driver that Paul provided. Now I have the driver. The computer and scanner connected by the USB cable (to the serial port) now have both been running for over 25 hours.
