• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Nabbed this Uniden SMU250KTS at our local online auction for a few bucks with a nice benchtop power supply. Looking for info on the radio interface box and progamming software. I already have a DOS machine set up here iwth a real serial port if need be. Looks like a fun radio to to tinker with.

Thanks

The Uniden SMU250KTS was programmed using a Uniden AMX501 radio interface box, which used the mic connector as the connection. AMX501 interfaces are occasionally available on eBay, but the asking prices are usually quite high. Way more than the “few bucks” you paid for the radio. Currently two listed on eBay for around $150 !

Unfortunately, a more reasonably priced alternative had been offered through the RFGuys.com website for many years, but the owner passed away in recent years, and I think all operations have ceased.

I may be able to confirm the correct programming software within the week, if you still need that information.

As was said in Post 2 you need the AMX RIB Box. The cables are part of the box. And software will really only run on DOS with a true serial port and adapter cable.

Here is one on ebay but probably cost more than the radio at this point.

Yeah I've seen that one before but I don't understand the other Jack it's headphone jack but I have true Singapore and I'm not sure how I would connect that if I purchased and yeah I paid roughly $20 for the unit

Okay now that makes a lot of sense now thank you cuz it was looking confusing so I guess the back side of the box is where you plug in the rib cord for serial port thanks

Yes the DB25 goes to your serial port on the PC. You will most likely need a DB9 to DB25 adapter. They shipped with a cable with a DB9 on one end and DB25 on the other end. This was the improvement from the AMX500 which was a prom burner. With that when you got 16 channels in and typed the wrong number you started over from channel 1...was a joy to get actual software.
