So, I been looking at scanners today and was wondering is the Uniden 160DN worth getting as an upgrade to my current 125XLT which is getting a little rougher nowadays I use primarily for airband, so any input would be appreciated. Many thanks :)

I am new here not sure if I have posted this in the right section.

Welcome to the RR forums. I don't own one but I've seen posts lauding the 160DN on air band. Go for it

Hi thanks for the welcome, I guess my question is should I just buy another 125 or get the 160DN not sure what the advantages are of the newer one?

Check out the RR wiki for your state and area to see if there's any DMR or NXDN in your area that you might be interested in. The 160 doesn't trunk track, and can't add P25 as an upgrade. If you ever become interested in Public Safety scanning, P25 is becoming more and more widespread. The BCD325P2 follows non-simulcast trunking well, and can have DMR and NXDN added. (big jump in price as well)

My 325P2 does a good job on airband, and I can't see why the 160 wouldn't be just as good. If you decide you don't need digital, the BC125AT is about the best bang for your buck for airband scanning. Mine gets regular use. The savings would let you upgrade the antenna if wanted.

Even though you're interested in handhelds, I'd be amiss in not mentioning that the BC365CRS is also a fantastic value for an airband scanner. The drawback is that it has to be manually programmed. That's not difficult with a keypad twice the size of the handheld.

Welcome to the forums, and good scanning!

The 160 DN is a very good airband scanner. Very sensitive. Almost on par with my Icom R30. The DMR and NXDN is a added bonus for future reference. It does not track as mentioned above but for airband, not needed. Uniden did a great job breaking down the search menus. Better than the 325P2. Not that hard to program either. If you do need P25 along with airband, the 325P2 is hard to beat for the price. I enjoy both of mine.

I also upgraded to the BCD160DN from my ICOM R6. Needed more than 500 channel storage (It has 1000) and didn't need a unit with P25.
Have 2 banks (200 channels) full of MilAir Freqs alone.
Easy to add/update freqs with ProScan software which is 100% worth the cost. The speaker sounded a bit "tinny" compared to my Icom, but now I have it connected to a separate USB powered speaker on my desk that I can easily connect to my PC desktop speakers for louder volume and/or recording to the ProScan software. A eBay purchased desk stand holder allows it to be connected to an external antenna, power supply & audio without falling over and being out of the way.
