Anyone seen the software being installed? Is the USB driver part of the software installation? I'm assuming that it's specific to this scanner.

Nice gimmick scanner for the traveller. I can't see having one if you are serious about this hobby.

Helpin' ya out Joe:

YouTube - New Uniden Police Scanner (HOMEPATROL)

And thanks for the kind words earlier in this thread. :)

Thanks. I forgot that the forum does not recognize URLs as links.

And you're welcome.

To be honest, I like the other answer, too - it's not dumbed down - it's smart enough to not need detailed programming (or some such words).

Regardless, I know of a lot of people who should have this model rather than any current model P25 scanner.

There is a second video on YouTube now that shows something interesting.

<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yjGuZteT8o>

It shows the unit OPERATING without power plugged in!

Joe M.

Battery power. I wonder if it can be USB powered / charged too?

Not a "gimmick scanner" at all.
I know it is easy to make the above comments when you have
only seen it from afar and have not seen the horsepower under
the hood (so to speak) but I am sure once the full specs/features
of the Home Patrol are released all serious radio enthusiasts will be
lining up to add one to their shack.
I guess time will tell :)

Charged - maybe. Powered, I doubt it.

USB can only provide a small amount of current - much less than would be required by a scanner (mainly due to the audio amplifier).

The charging would depend on the capacity of the battery.

From UPMan's comments, when connected to a pc via a USB cable, the scanner will show up on the pc as if it were a hard drive, so that you could "massage" the programming with the software on the pc instead of on the scanner. Software was not 'demo'd'.

Also, while not enabled yet, the hardware capability exists for audio to be fed through the USB connection, for streaming or listening via the pc speakers. Got the impression that was on the "to do" list, either before final release, or perhaps shortly thereafter.

Power is 4 AA's (included).

I must say Im disapointed

I expected from uniden for more
It doesnt decode nothing digital then P25 a thing that 5 years old scanners already have ....

If it work with ZipCode what about non USA country ?where it will take the scanning data base from .....

I certenly wont buy any scanner .... (as someone post already ) untill it will have more digital options such as TRBO IDAS NEXEDGE etc ....
it look like a nice gimick (as someone also post here ) it is mabe good for the beginers that dont know anything about scanner but for the pros that know exectly what they want to listen , but unfortenetly they cant listen because by occasion it is a TRBO system and the scanner cant receive this Digital mode ..... it have no added value

Luckey me that there are a few projects (software decode ) that try to decode the missing digital modes (currently TRBO decode already running end decoding ....

well hope that at least the foot at Uniden was good .... :)

Your right. I just googled USB current specs and it's 100 mA maximum. The USB folks should re-spec the USB current drain then. Display lighting too.

I was there! It is an awesome new product. From the handout at the open house this will answer some of your questions.
Power Up:
Insert the 4 aa nickel metal-hydride batteries.
Plug the ac adapter into the HomePatrol unit.
Plug the other end of the adapter into a standard 120v AC power outlet.
Press and hold POWER until HomePatrol turns on.

Initial Setup:
The first time you power up HomePatrol, you"ll be prompted to connect HomePatrol to your computer (Use the USB cable) to install the HomePatrol Sentinal software. This software will ensure you are using the latest software and database. HomePatrol will appear to be an additional drive on your system.
The database will be updated regularly and will be as easy as connecting to the internet.
