Has anyone heard anything about U.P. steam engine 844 running this year? Will the U.P. be running any passenger excursions this year?

You got that right! I really think that steam engines are life support machines for the whistle itself.

Thankfully, the railroads usually call off the mile post, or signal block on the road channel, which is great for keeping track of where the steam locomotive is at. However, even better is when you have an Amateur Radio license and can use 146.490 simplex, to coordinate photo locations and other important information.

UP Steam Power

I happen to live about 100 yards from the main Union Pacific line which runs East and West and got to see the UP 3985 Challenger pass by my house on its way to Texas for the Points of Light Foundation Fundraiser in Houston. I felt like a child in a candy store, there isnt words to explain how ausome it is to see the largest operating steam locomotive in the world pass by my house!! , the whistle was loud and the ground shook like an earthquake FEEL THE POWER its a true rush!!! :D :D Tony.

I remember reading an article a couple of months ago that said 844 would be out this year.

I love watching the NKP 765 and the PM 1225 in operation. I understand that they may run the 1225 on a special excursion here in Michigan, but I hope that the 765's Class 5 overhaul is completed soon.

My favorite steam locomotive on any day was the N&W 1218, which felt like a major earthquake when it passed by the ground you stood on. I can remember riding in the baggage car on the "State Fair Limited" excursion from Toledo to Columbus, Ohio in August of 1987. What a blast that was when it would set-off the new talking hotbox detectors on 161.250 and 161.190 MHz. I thought the detectors were going to blow a nut because they were going crazy thinking that there was a severe axle overheating problem.

Come to think about it, I really miss the N&W 611 as well.

Heard on the Trainorders site that 844 only lacks the re lettering process to be completed for her to be ready to roll. Also saw an interesting scene where E-9 Diesel UP 949 was being used to switch her around the Cheyenne Roundhouse.

Check out the steam section of http://www.trainorders.com.

I miss both 1218 and 611. My family and I used to ride the Heart of Dixie Chapter NRHS excursions from Birmingham, AL to Chattanooga, TN each November and April. Many an hour was spent standing in the vestibule doorway watching the world go by. I even got to visit the cab of 611 and talk to the fireman while waiting in Chattanooga.

Here's a picture that I took of 611 early one Spring morning in Birmingham.

Being from the NE, my favorite steamer would have to be the C&O 614. It's sad to see and hear about the condition shes currently in, all because of fiscal irresponsablity....

I was on the U.P Site last week, the page doesn't have a schedule yet. it says to check back later. However, I do know threre is at least one run this year. Denver to Cheyenne Run o the 23rd of July. they do it everyyear for Cheyenne Frontier Days. it is put on by the Denver Post. here is the URL: http://www.cfdtrain.com/

Have fun!!

if I'm not at the Busch race at PPIR, I'll be chasing somewhere along the line. :D :D

sking128 -- thanks for the info on the Cheyenne-Denver run for Frontier Days. I may be able to work that into my vacation this year. Bookmarked that site...

BTW, the power shown on that website says they intend to UP3985 along with a diesel helper, not UP844. No big deal, any big steam is good, IMO.

Several years ago when that engine was up for sale, I really wish I would have had the money to buy her. The C&O 614 is one engine that I never got a chance to ride behind when she was active. Ironically, she past by my cousins's house and she never even told me about it until two months later on. back in the early 1980s, I would have loved to gotten some good photos of her in action.

Hi guys,

Well, if you don't get an opportunity to ride behind it you can always look at this picture.

I've been fortunate enough to be trackside for several of the excursions that the 614 ran between Hoboken, NJ and Port Jervis, NY in recent years. I know 614 is currently out of service, but if I read Erik's post correctly it sounds as if she's rusting away???? I thought she was at least stored indoors.

It's 130am here on the East Coast....when I get home from work this morning at 6am I'll post a great shot of the 614 I took from the Tuxedo, NY platform. She was moving at speed and it was absolutely breathtaking! I was behind the platform yellow line but it didn't matter.......she took my breath away!!!
