@1200L United 1048 over Chester Co. PA having auto pilot issues. Female op with maint on 129.4 says auto pilot will not stay ingaged; and the a/c feels heavy and wants to roll back & forth. She's waiting for further instructions.

Thanks for heads up on this and just heard they are diverting to Dulles with not being comfortable to fly the plane to Mexico.

No autopilot, auto land or nose wheel steering.

I mainly monitor the USAF planes in the Wilmington CAP on weekends, but do have some civilian air frequencies in the radio.

Will have to add 129.4, as I like these better than ATC frequencies.

Must also have to burn off some fuel to get to maximum landing weight. Had 27.2K of fuel onboard.

Shows them South of KIAD, so most likely has to turn around.

Diverting to IAD

I already had one flight almost divert today after holding for 55 min, one flight return to the gate for fuel after 95 minutes and another sitting for 80 min with no update from ATC. Mess today

If it was an F-4 Phantom I probably could help them out. Sounds like at least one axis of Stability Augmentation not working. That being the case, the Autopilot won't stay engaged. Just speculation from an old USAF Phantom Phixer.

That was cool to see all the ground vehicles on ADSB swarm the plane. That OPS car was waiting at the runway and followed behind it as it landed. That must be a cool gig to floor your car down the worlds biggest drag strip on a daily basis, it hit 100 mph running down the plane

It's a cool gig until you pull up to a crashed aircraft - then it's not so cool anymore. A car crash but with a lot more victims

From the United flight tracking site the text below.

UA 1048: We're sorry for unexpectedly stopping in Washington Dulles this afternoon. Our maintenance team needs to evaluate a technical issue on your plane. To get you back on your way, we assigned your flight a new airplane departing from Gate D18. Thank you for your patience throughout this experience.

well yea, that took a dark turn, yea sure that too, I meant more like the ops vehicle that checks the runways for debris and animals and stuff. This ops car has been all over the airports runways and taxiways doing some good speed considering the amount of land they have to cover and in between aircraft landing, thats some speed!

Yeah I know but that is part of the job as well. Additionally, think about what they do on a runway sweep - check runway for debris and animals and stuff. You have to drive down a two mile long road that is 200 foot wide at high speed and do that knowing if you miss something a plane could hit the debris (FOD) - foreign object damage. And you just told the tower the runway is clear.
