Might be slightly less clueless! =)
So before the title misleads anyone, CUPD is still using analog communications last I checked.
This post and the information contained within it is delayed by about 1.5 years. I never posted this information previously as it never left the testing phase and disappeared afterwards. I post this as it is now largely useless to myself and in the event that they revive this project.
CUPD and their CSOs runs entirely on the Motorola XPR series radios. I am not exactly sure on what mobiles they use, but they use the XPR 6550 for all their portables. All their radios are DMR/MOTOTRBO capable. All of their frequencies are licensed for both analog and DMR communications.
March 18th, 2015, CUPD Tac 4 (151.5425 MHz) started transmitting a digital beacon that I determined to be a DMR signal. Prior to this, Tac 4 had not been used in more than a year. At first, it was a lot of coverage testing throughout the campus. During the testing of DMR, the users specifically mentioned the amazing audio quality multiple times. April saw more testing and beginnings of system patching between their existing analog system and their digital system. On May 13th, 2015, CUPD went ahead and ran primary dispatch on the DMR system for approximately 14 hours. There was not much usage afterwards, and eventually the beacon disappeared. Tac 4 has never been used again for either analog or digital.
At the time, CUPD appeared to be heading in the direction of renaming their channels in the event they transitioned. "Silver" was called "CU 1" on the digital system and "Gold" was called "CU 2." Since they never went through with their transition, and the old names are still being used.
I have no idea if they will ever pursue the DMR route again, but maybe this post will give anyone a head start on monitoring if they do. Hopefully they choose a more interoperability friendly digital mode next time.
Thus, I conclude with what little technical information I have:
University of Colorado Boulder Police Department DMR (Defunct)
151.5425 MHz
Code Code: 1
