A crew member of Night Train was taken by a Coast Guard Air helicopter from the middle of Lake Huron after falling 40 feet from the boat’s mast early this morning, according to a statement from the Detroit Coast Guard.
The 35-year-old man was one of a crew of 11 aboard the 35-foot boat competing in the Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat race.
The boat was nearly halfway into the race in the middle of Lake Huron, about 31 nautical miles east of Harrisville, Mich.
The crewmember climbed the mast to fix a jammed rigging when he fell into the lake.
He was recovered about 25 minutes later by his own crew.
