A good barometer for conditions on the VHF band is the NOAA weather stations. In fact, many on here, including me, like to DX them.

The furthest I've heard on VHF was a 2M repeater out of Virginia, from my location in northeast NJ.

Back in the early 1990s when I lived in Van Wert, I had a Radio Shack discone in the attic of a two story house connected to an amplifier. On a super tropo opening, I heard a NOAA weather broadcast from Florida! The opening didn't last but a couple of minutes, but I was checking the weather band at just the right time.

I'd be anticipating some really nice tropo as the cold front moves into/through your respective areas. I've had tropo every morning, just not nearly as good as the day I copied USP Hazelton. But I'm anticipating it over night and into the morning for Eastern Ohio at least over the next couple days. Hepburn Maps show some activity over the midwest.
