Tonight, 4/19/20, while driving home around 2300-2330, I was hearing quite a bit of skip on my scanner in my truck. Its a BC796D. While most of it was pretty staticy, I did get some very clear transmissions on 160.965 (railroad channel 57). I heard "District 23, "An EDP on Mott (? spelling) Ave"," 23 Adam". It sounded like police, giving dates of birth and spelling names phonetically. Anyone familiar with this? Thanks, Kevin

Footnote:
Many RR VHF channels have been reassigned to public service, one of my local cop shops is on the band and here and there you'll find everything from soup to nuts. Now not all police activity is railroad bulls, like Bobby said the times they are a changin'.

Skip? Could Be.

I remember when NYPD 7-8-9 divisions in the Bronx were on VHF high band they could be picked up in the Stormville Mountain area of Dutchess County, New York & when Philly FD was sharing some VHF high band frequencies with FDNY I could pick them up at night in South Brooklyn.

I wouldn't consider it skip or ducting, no. NYC is close enough to CT that it doesn't require much effort for the radio waves to travel along the ground. This certainly sounds like a case of normal ground wave propagation.

At the same time I was also hearing FDNY from Brooklyn. Just s a reference point I am on the eastern Side of CT. About 20 minutes From either Casino.

If you would not consider it skip or ducting ( whats the difference by the way) at what distance does it become such?

You are hearing line-of-sight transmissions.

SKIP is where radio signals bounce off a layer of the ionosphere and come back down hundreds or even thousands of miles away. If you were hearing police in Florida I would call that skip.

Tropospheric propagation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for ducting

Radio propagation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for Skip (see the main section called "Ionospheric modes (skywave)". Then also the section titled Sporadic-E propagation which is common for scanner frequencies.

Click the "skywave" link also as that link may better define skip.

I can't say that there is a defined distance before a signal is considered skip as it can vary by frequency and other conditions.

My guess is signals were enhanced due to a water path. When out on Long Beach Island (NJ) it's not uncommon to hear signals from Maryland to Massachusetts.

Maybe enhanced over water; here at the Jersey Shore, Long Island comes in like gang busters but the NY tunnel rats have WAY more above ground coverage than they need. They blast in down here stronger than many locals barely a few miles away. I'm not surprised one bit they cover Connecticut as well, not that there's anyone up there on the system or down here for that matter. Good grief Charlie Brown, they tower over NOAA weather radio KWO35 running a kilowatt atop 30 Rock!

Tom, when you're on LBI you can hear a fly fart in Africa.
