A paving company is paving the street in front of where I work. They use walkie talkies for traffic control, but my Close Call didn't pick them up. I was very close to the one person directing traffic and watched her talk on the radio. I presume it's one of those radios that use multi-frequencies and is not monitorable by scanners.

Depends on what they're using. Generally speaking, they wouldn't be using anything too high tech like encryption or frequency hopping technology.

You probably just didn't find them yet. They're likely just using a VHF or UHF simplex frequency or FRS frequencies.

Do a TAFL search for the company and see if anything comes up for them.

I don't know about Canada, but in the US most are using FRS radios or simplex nationwide freq's (I do traffic control and they'd NEVER give us a decent radio) most comms are short. Last car - Blue Chevy, send your traffic, all stop, etc.

If they are using a DMR system, I have found that Close Call will not lock onto a radio transmitting DMR, as its output is not a continuous carrier like a FM transmission.

I did monitor them for a bit and the one person was talking for more than a few seconds. She had a unit that had a corded microphone that she talked into. I don't know the name of the paving company as their vehicles only have a large green and blue 'G' on it. Perhaps scanning UHF would find them. Not sure.

Most probably UHF, most often FRS. Possibly DMR, thats why Close Call didn't grab them. When these situations occur, always try to get a look at the radio. It wont tell you the freq, but the antenna will indicate the band in use and often the radio description will tell you if its FRS or not.

Recently there has been a pile of users buying Baofang's or other super cheap radios. They could be on any default freq that it came with.

I live around 50 yards from a massive construction job here in downtown Hamilton. I Close Called them. They use 451.1875, it's a very common construction frequency.

As others have stated, check the FRS channels.
Also you can try plugging in some of these frequencies in your scanner. They are common low power channels. Some are used in repeaters as well.

Nice update link for the default freq. I think Ill add them into my 536 files as a separate conventional personality.

That is highly unlikely, besides, the OP stated they were using radios and with speaker mics.

More than likely a company simplex frequency.
You can get network radios that run apps like Zello and speaker mics are optional.

Again..coming from someone that's worked traffic control for a construction company before. It's unlikely it's a highly sophisticated radio system.

Construction companies don't often spend lots of money on radios for traffic control.

Either they're a company frequency that's probably a VHF or UHF simplex frequency or a rental radio, or FRS. I've used both. I stand by my comment that it's unlikely to be Zello, frequency hopping or DTR type radios.

In Canada, radios rentals in simplex use 453-454, 458-459, 464-465 & 469-470, a simple search on thoses 4 segments and you will find your user, 458 & 469 are your best bets!
