Did they go out of business? That's too bad because I thought it was an interesting product. The problem was that tuning would have most likely been 100% required on all installations, because the design is very narrow and there's no room to fudge. And also they were working against decades of traditional whips. But there's promise in the DDRR.

They very well could be out of business. Low band is dying (unfortunately). I remember installing 2 of them on septic trucks about 8 years ago. They were using them on 33 MHz. They were a PAIN in the neck to tune up. I don't think they ever worked perfectly. I guess if you don't have the room for a whip, something is better than nothing. I would keep an eye on ebay for one.

I had a feeling that was probably the case. They maybe could have marketed them for unique gov/mil applications, but I can see the average radio guy not wanting to deal with it... Especially if you've installed hundreds of whips that work fine.

Untenna

Sorry to hear about the apparent demise of Com-Rad.

I knew the founder, Jim Waldron, many years ago. He and his wife were both very charming and personable when I went to visit them to inquire about a 2 meter version of the antenna (the Untenna started out life as an amateur radio product). Jim, as I recall, was a fairly accomplished piano player as well as an antenna expert.

The VHF version of the Untenna worked very well, and several school bus companies in Western New York used the low band version as well.

Funny, I hadn't thought about those antennas in years.

They seem to work OK on 2 meters and 440, they are good for not showing antennas on cars. My car has been broken into and robbed more times then I can remember. I like it because it is easily hidden. I got mine at an estate sale and wouldn't mind buying another one.

Well, I think there was two sets of people doing that design. One seemed to be geared towards commercial stuff and the other for ham. I'm not sure which was which, but the site for the commercial one seems to be gone and no forwarding info.

Untenna

I dug out my old untenna from my many "parts boxes" trying to find an enough parts to build an external antennna for my HP-1.

In my file cabinet I found their user price schedule dated May 1, 1984 and the then current brochure.

They built me a special one that was effective on public safety and marine frequencies. I think they charged me about $55.00.

The antenna works great on my PT Cruiser paired with the home patrol.

If anyone is interested, I will scan the sales literature and post it.
