I heard Union Pacific in Nevada has gone to the NXDN protocol on their radios... Has that happened anywhere else yet?

What are you basing this on? Where did you hear this? 2 to 1 it's probably a rumor. The radios are NXDN capable, but in Arkansas everything is as it has been, NFM.

I can't imagine that at all. I've worked for U.P.& can tell you thats not how they operate. If they're gonna do it, they'll do it system wide, not just in Nevada.

It's the same here in OK as its always been.

My friend works for UP out of Little Rock (I believe), and based on what he put in Facebook, his radio is NXDN capable, but I don't know if they have enabled it or not (and I very much doubt he knows).

I work in LR and listen to UP extensively, They're solely NFM, even though the radios are NXDN capable, 10-2 is right, if they made the change, it would be systemwide rather than just in Nevada.

I have a friend in Texas who works for UP and they are still on NFM there. The radios in several locomotive cabs were switched from Motorola to JEM branded radios. I have never heard of them but he says they are junk compared to the Motorola radios. I don't know if JEM radios can do NXDN or not. Just an FYI. But, as I said, Texas is still NFM. He does have a Kenwood HT but I don't know if it is NXDN capable.

UP, BNSF, and Amtrak all have the 4K00F1E designator in all of their licenses here in Oregon, yet all of them are operating analog...at least, so far as I can tell. Same goes for most of our Class IIIs, and both of our Class IIs (which don't even have the emission designator in their licenses).

A couple of engineers have refereed to their new Kenwood radios as "driftwood"...

I disagree...

They will cut in certain segments of track at a time... not all at once system wide. Just like when the started switching to narrowband. There was a subdivision general order that ordered the radio display change, and that was that. Certain places went before other. Digital transition will likely be no different.

I agree. Anyone who worked on narrow banding will tell you that for all but the smallest system, it was a big task. Switching all of UP at the same time is not possible. Too many radios and repeaters that need to be reprogrammed. Areas at a time will be done.

UP Goes To NXDN Protocol

My friend in Nevada replied to my inquiry with this: "I saw the notice effective 123112 for the local area".

I don't have any further info than this...

Without seeing the exact notice, it's impossible to tell exactly what's going on, let alone, when or where it's happening. It could just as easily be about a local yard test channel, or, simply a reminder about the Narrowband deadline, (which is what the "effective 123112" sounds like). What's the location in Nevada? If it is a local test channel, it probably doesn't mean the whole area is changing at once.

UP Goes To NXDN In Nevada

He lives in Las Vegas. I'll ask if it was just in the yard or on the Cima & Caliente Subs... I'll post what I hear.

I have reviewed those subdivions, and site specific instructions for Las Vegas, and there is nothing stating that people were to start using nxdn channels (200-300) in that area.

I have a friend that is a radio systems tech with the Railway's and we talked about this.

What he told me is, nation wide, every body has gone narrowband and is or are also licenseing for NXDN capibilies with the POTENTAL of going NXDN within the next year or two.

He also said that in some areas line maintance crews and techs are testing and using NXDN on a limited basis.

For what's worth.
