I used to be able to hear the UP 124.7 Detector on 160.230 which is near my house. I'm sure the detector is still there, but have they changed freqs because I can't hear it any more. This was the UP road channel in the area south of Sacramento.

Thanks.

If you are still hearing the UP road channel, then they probably changed the detector to "talk on defect" only.

Your next step is to pay a visit and see if it is still there.

Is there a website that lists all the locations?

There are books that list the mile post marker. I've seen GPS positions as well.

If you search the FCC database, the detector location should be in the report.

however, UP has been changing a lot to REPORT ON DEFECT.

Update...

Well, I found the detector. It's on 161.310 (AAR Channel 80). I think the road channel remains the same. In case anyone cared :)

Ok since this is the California forum and not the Railroad forum I won't look quite as ignorant asking this inevitable question:

What are the detectors? And what do you hear from them on the said railroad-assigned VHF frequencies?

Thanks :)

Good question! I was wondering but didn't want to sound ignorant... :)

Hey princesses....be civil!

A railroad detector talks after a train rolls by, telling various things like temperature, axle county, if any loads have shifted on any of the cars, or it may talk at all depending how it is programmed (only talks when there is a problem)
