I am looking at getting my HAM license this spring and have been doing some reading on radios as well as talking to an old HAM operator about what to look for in a radio. I am looking in to a handheld to start (I live in an apt so base station won't be feasable) and noticing a lot of the handhelds are 144/430 MHz but some are listed differently. I was told to find out what bands I want to use before buying a radio and that some bands are more "popular" than others. So here I am. What should I be looking for in a radio? I have been looking at the BaoFeng UV-5R as a budget radio to "tinker" with as I don't want to spend a lot of money on a radio and find out I bought the wrong one.
