Hey all, some of you might remember my first thread on my car, though probably not
Anyway, a little background. I live in the High Desert of southern California and finally decided to get myself a trunking scanner, so I went cheap and simple with a RS Pro-163. The county is still analog up here and I haven't heard that they plan to go digital anytime soon (it's CA, we're broke!!!)
So, I wanted to mount it in the car along with my ham radio, a Kenwood TM-271A, which I bought right before they stopped making. I originally had the kenwood mounted under the dash in front of the shifter, not ideal in my mind but it worked great. However, the scanner didn't really have a place to go, so I decided to move the kenwood into the dash, right underneath my AM/FM/CD radio and put the scanner where the kenwood used to be. I have also since added a Maldol EX-107B on an NMO mount back center of the roof and put my old magmount on the trunk and use that for the scanner- not technically a scanning antenna, but that scanner was picking up the 800MHz trunking system with no antenna attached when I was messing with settings in the car, so any sort of antenna will do wonders
The topmost image is the final install, scanner all the way on the bottom, ham radio in dash right below the car radio. The scanner has a downward firing speaker, which at first I didn't think would go so well, but man that thing can throw audio, a little bit of a distortion and breakup when totally cranked, but I've not needed to go that loud in 'normal' driving yet
The next photo was the original setup, with the radio all the way at the bottom, the only bad thing is that when in park, no joy on working any of the controls, which was fine as most controls could be input through the mic and also it wasn't that difficult to shift to neutral!
The next three are from the day of the install of the NMO mount, I had never done one before and to be totally honest they're not that bloody difficult. The first one is the over all, the next two are of the mounting spot outside of the car as well as underneath the headliner.
More to follow!!
