I finally figured out how to use the search feature on this scanner (Radio Shack 197 Digital Trunking) and am picking up all kinds of channels that I can't find on any of the online freq lists such as Radio Reference, Radio Shack/Scan Lite, CityFreq and FCC.gov. I am fairly new to this and don't know alot about it, but why can't I find an updated list of frequencies online for my area. My areas are Georgetown/Horry counties and travel frequently through Charleston to Columbia. Any ideas for me?
PS. I do not understand the Palmetto 800 system so I don't know if I'm using that or not.
Please be gentle when answering because I'm really trying to learn all this. Robin and Marc

This site has a wiki page with the good info for new comers to scanning. If you're in S.C. most likely you'll want to monitor the Palmetto 800 system. After you read the wiki on trunking basics you'll have a better understanding on how the system works and then you'll know how to ask the right questions:)

Take a look at the Palmetto 800 map on this site and take note of the towers in your area, or areas, you plan to travel. You'll want to add those tower frequencies into your scanner and then add the talk groups of the agencies you want to listen to.

Conventional radio systems are much easier to understand so I recommend starting with learning these and then graduate up to trunking systems.... don't expect to learn it all overnight though. It may take a few times programming your radio to understand how the system(s) work as well as customize it to the way you like it.

Also, if your scanner has the capability to program it via software, computer, etc., I would go that route. It's less confusing, IMHO, and will get you on the track to listening a lot faster.

Sorry it's taken so long to get back, Football season has us really busy right now....Go Gamecocks! But anyway,... the list we have that come in good here at the house is as follows:

462.275
851.45
851.625
852.125
852.8
856.4375
856.7125
856.9625
857.2125
857.7125
858.2375
859.2375

These are the frequencies we get in Georgetown, SC We don't know the name of the frequencies but we either had these or did a search and got them. If you have any idea what they are, please let us know. We are now listening and trying to label them. We have a different scanner for traveling. Thanks for you kindness, Robin and Marc.

Freq for Georgetown

Thanks a bunch for the info. I'll do some research this weekend. i did look at the towers and it seems there is one in Georgetown but I don't know how that affects the frequencies that I enter. I guess it will all eventually come but it seems very complicated right now. LOL
We have used the scanner software before and it loaded the frequencies a lot easier for sure, but now we can't get the cords/drivers to work correctly so we keep doing it manually for now. We have several different kinds of software and four different cords, so we're still working on that. But if we did get that figured out we'd still have the problem of not being able to locate freq. online. If you have a list of freq for the Georgetown area or charleston or myrtle beach.... we'd love to see it and see if it differs from the ones we have. Thanks so much for your patient and sincere response. We're looking forward to talking to you more. Thanks again, Robin and Marc

Not sure about the frequencies you posted but.... if you're going to monitor the Palmetto 800 system you'll need to enter the frequencies as TRUNKED and not CONVENTIONAL, then you'll need to enter the talk groups you want to listen to. The frequencies you enter should be ones associated with the towers you'll be near so do some searching on this site for the towers, frequencies, and talk groups you want to listen to. Using a computer, and appropriate software, will make programming a lot easier and allow you to make and/or save a profile.

Read the wiki on trunking basics, trunking 101, etc., so you'll have a better understanding of trunked radio systems, i.e., Palmetto 800. Using the SEARCH function on your scanner isn't going to provide you the scanning enjoyment you seek unless you're just looking to find unknown frequencies and trying to figure out who the user(s) is/are. If you want to monitor SPECIFIC users then you're going to have to learn how to program the proper tower frequencies and talk groups.

This site is updated regularly by members, and non-members, of the site and the info posted is very accurate, IMHO. The list of tower frequencies, talk groups, etc., for the Palmetto 800 system will be listed in the database for South Carolina. You just have to decide which towers, and talk groups, you want to monitor.

sounda like the freqs you have listed aqre a mixture of horry gtown and the old charleston county public safety radio system if you live in gtown county the control channel for that system is 853.6875 make sure you have your scanner set to motorola mode if you have a radio shack scanner if you live in horry the control channels for that system are 857.2125 858.2125.859.2125 and 858.6875 and they change each day so make sure you have all of them in and the conway pal 800 control channel is 853.8625 hope that helps

I tried to enter 853.6875 for Georgetown but i don't know where to enter the motorola mode. I'm gonna read up some more on this in the next few days but is there an easy way to just enter this one channel for now? Thanks so much!!!

yes when you go to program it hit program then trunk and it should say not trunked go to the mode button and hit it until motorola comes up and leave it there and then program the control channel but make sure that you have had the tables rebanded in that scanner otherwise it wont work on that mode
